Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Map (illustratore). 1st. This book of Antarctica follows the history of its discovery and exploration from the times when strong beliefs existed about a great southern continent. However, it was not until late 1820 that a definite discovery of this frozen mass was achieved --- by a young American in a tiny sloop, Nathanial Palmer. His story provides the first of a dozen that follow the efforts, successes and failures, the legends and fantasys, up to the intensive Antarctic operations that began after WWII and into the 1950s. As well as the famous names -- Wilkes, Amunsden, Scott, Shackleton and Byrd --- are others lesser known, but who contributed to the early exploration of Antarctica. 237 pages including exploration chronology, 23 b/w photos, map. Red hard covers with gilt spine titles VG, dealer stamp lower FFEP, text block otherwise excellent.
Original Cloth. Condizione: VG+. Condizione sovraccoperta: NVG. First Edition. Book has minor wear, owners signature. Dj has edgewear, light soiling. Signed by both Authors on the title page. Signed by Author(s). Book.
