Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Original pictorial dark green cloth, pp.x, 402, 32pp rear catalogue of publishers books in varied subjects. Translated from the original Norwegian by William Archer. Illustrated, including three coloured folding maps. The life story and multiple significant achievements of the Norwegian polar explorer, scientist, diplomat and humanitarian. Nansen is best known for his polar travel and exploration, which he pursued up to 1896.He led the team that made the first interior crossing of Greenland in 1888. His final journey was the Fram Expedition of 1893 - 1896, an unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole utilising the east-west currents of the Arctic Ocean. He would subsequently become an important zoologist and oceanographer and in later life working to improve the lot of refugees. This book covers his early life up to 1893. Pictorial cover depicting a marine boating scene in silver is very crisp and bright, as is the spine titling and silver representation of snow, although the cloth is very slightly faded to the spine and inner rear cover margin. Other than occasional light foxing the contents are crisp and tight. One map has a small split to the inner margin just running onto the map area. Given the publication date, a near fine copy. Heavy book weighing c 1600g when packed, and thus extra postage ( at cost ) will be requested to cover shortfall from default postage quotation for 1000g for UK 1st class mailing ( 2nd class unaffected ) and overseas orders.
