Scuff at rear cover. The author was with the Department of Aeronautics at the National Air and Space Museum. This work highlights women who were active in aviation in the United States as pilots, barnstormers, promoters, passengers, and supporters. Rare photographs, documents, newspaper clippings and other archival materials held by the Library of the National Air and Space Museum have provided the nucleus of this study. They have been supplemented by photographs and materials from private collections, as well as by firsthand accounts from participants in the events of the day. The attitude that flying was socially inappropriate and even physically impossible for women was common. To overcome the prejudice and the overprotectiveness, women often took to the skies first as passengers before assuming a more visible role as pilot, thereby demonstrating the relative ease and safety of air travel. Lillian Gatlin, the first women to make a transcontinental flight, was a passenger. There were only a handful of qualified woman pilots at the end of World War I. During the twenties an ever-increasing number of women barnstormed, raced, carried passengers, and set records. Their contributions argue for the recognition of a place for both men and women in this and all fields of human endeavor. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.
