Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. Reprint. This copy is in fine condition bound in blue buckram covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. There is a signature dated 1955 to the f.e.p. The price clipped dust wrapper has some mild edge wear but is still in fine condition, it has been covered in clear, removable acetate proective film. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Make a Signal! (1956) by Captain Jack Broome is a humorous, illustrated compendium of real Royal Navy signals—both the dignified and the delightfully absurd—drawn from Broome's long naval career. The 1955 Putnam first edition is now a minor classic of naval humour and an appealing collectible for maritime‑history readers. Make a Signal! gathers famous and infamous signals sent in, to, or about the Royal Navy, presented with Broome's own line drawings and a selection of black‑and‑white photographs. The tone is wry, anecdotal, and steeped in service culture—Broome uses authentic signal traffic to reveal the quirks, frustrations, and occasional comedy of naval communication. Ref GG 2.…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. 1st Edition. This copy is in new, unmarked condition bound in blue buckram covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is lightly sunned to the spine but still in as new condition. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Make Another Signal is Captain Jack Broome's wry, sharply observed memoir of Royal Navy life—told with the dry humour, timing, and self‑deprecation that made Broome one of the service's most distinctive voices. The book is not a formal war history but a personal and often mischievous recollection of naval culture, signalling blunders, command quirks, and the absurdities of life at sea. It sits squarely in the tradition of post‑war naval humour, but with Broome's characteristic edge: a seasoned officer's eye for human folly and institutional eccentricity. Ref GG 2.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. A well loved and used, navy coloured, hardback book in reasonably good condition. Normal wear and marks apply consistent with use and age. Pencil date and lettering on first and last blank pages. First published July 1955, Second Impression October 1955, this specific book was reprinted 1956. 224 pages, all intact, all pages, text and illustrations are in good, clean, readable order. Slight fading on edge of papers. This a lovely book about naval signals. A signal is a sign which conveys information. This book is concerned mainly with the pre-microphone period: with signals that travel alone and, like telegrams, have to be carefully worded to be readily understood. Unlike telegrams, however they are impersonal and public. They carry the authority of a ship or a squadron. They are paid with reputations, sometimes even with human lives. The era of such signals produced craftsmen who could compose on a pad the exact phrase to suit the situation. Their signals had power and penetration; they inspired, provoked, amused or debunked with an aptitude all of their own. A signal at sea which commended was round the ship like a flash of light. One which reproved spread gloom just as quickly. A brilliant book that is full of fascinating information and experiences of that period in time.…
