He was the first naval officer to head the elite Aerodynamics Flight at Farnborough where he tested captured German types at the end of World War Two. Carrier operations are potentially the harshest and most dangerous test aircraft and pilot can face. Landing on the pitching, bucking deck of a carrier or catapulted over a plunging bow, shipboard aircraft had to be exceptional.
