Theophilus Brown (illustratore). NEW, UNCIRCULATED, my collection. Mint Condition. Rare oop out of print Catalogue 2010 San Francisco Reynolds Gallery. Richly illustrated with colour plates. 58 pages, 8.5"x10.5" William Theophilus Theo Brown (April 7, 1919 - February 8, 2012) was an American Gay artist. He became prominent as a member of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. In 1952 Brown enrolled in the graduate studio program at the University of California, Berkeley, joining a group of artists?including Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, Elmer Bischoff, James Weeks, and Nathan Oliveira. Following his WWII discharge, he began to study painting, moving between New York City and Paris, meeting an impressive range of artists that included Pablo Picasso, Braque, Giacometti, Balthus, and de Kooning, among others. While attending Berkeley, Brown also met and fell in love with his long-time partner and fellow-painter, Paul Wonner. In the early 1960s, Brown and Wonner moved to Santa Monica, where they developed a close friendship with fellow gay couple, novelist Christopher Isherwood, and portrait artist Don Bachardy. Over the years, Brown and Wonner also fostered friendships with playwright William Inge, composer and conductor André Previn, actress Eva Marie Saint and her husband, director Jeffrey Hayden, and New Zealand novelist Janet Frame. Artist couple Paul Wonner and Theophilus Brown were ahead of their time in many ways, and yet neither have had their work exhibited as often or as prominently as some of their contemporaries, nor have they received the same level of commercial appreciation. This is due to several factors, including their focus on male-to-male interactions and male nudes and misinterpretations of their important and early position within Bay Area Figuration. On a national level, it also had to do with the fact that they spent most of their working years in California rather than New York. *** "During the 1950s a few painters in the San Francisco Bay Area began to stage personal, dramatic defections from the prevailing style of Abstract Expressionism, creating what would come to be known as Bay Area Figurative Art. In 1949 David Park destroyed many of his nonobjective canvases and began a new style of consciously naive figuration. Soon Elmer Bischoff and Richard Diebenkorn joined Park and other painters such as Nathan Oliveira, Theophilus Brown, James Weeks, and Paul Wonner in the move away from abstraction and toward figurative subject matter. When artists such as Bruce McGaw, Manuel Neri, and Joan Brown emerged as a second generation of figurative artists, the momentum grew for a powerful new development in American painting. The achievement of Bay Area Figurative painters and sculptors has become directly relevant to current debates regarding abstraction and representation, as well as to discourses on modernism and postmodernism. Indeed, the historical phenomenon of the movement is an important case study in the evolution of modernism in America, serving as an early example of rupture in the formalist 'mainstream.'.

Hardcover. Condizione: vg. First edition. Oblong quarto. XII, 134pp. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over purple cloth, with blind-stamped lettering on front cover and silver lettering on spine. Frontispiece portrait of the artist. This volume features 115 examples of Paul Harris' artwork made between 1949 and 1999. They can be divided loosely into three periods which intermingle and overlap. The first is highly experimental: works done in papier mache, plaster, and fabric. Concurrently, Harris made a series of male heads, cloned from one mold in vacuum formed plexiglas. The third and final period includes works made of wood or cast in bronze - diverse in richness of ideas and pared down in form to absolute essentials. Minor shelf wear. Very minor age-toning along paper margin. Wrappers, binding and interior in overall very good condition.
