Quarter-bound in gree…n cloth over pictorial boards, black endpapers. Small 4to. Boards worn all over, heavily rubbed, chipped and scuffed on edges with some paper loss, rounded on corners, spine faded, rear board toned. Front hinge cracked almost along the complete length, with webbing visible, resulting the volume being significantly loose. Prize presentation label on front paste down, indicating the volume was presented to Edna Davis in January 1911 by the Christchurch Baptist Sunday School. Text block edges toned and rubbed. Tissue guard toned and spotted. Some spotting, toning and signs of fingering throughout volume, with a couple of short, closed tears at page edges in places. A collection of stories, articles and poetry aimed at Christian children. A hard to find volume with some delightful illustrations, even if the stories and poetry seem a little moralistic for today's tastes. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: ''Harper's Magazine' began publication in 1850 and recreated the American magazine, serving as a promotional vehicle for Harper and Brothers books as well as the new 'literary' fiction and essay of the time, using sophisticated illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time. A handsome set.

Taking the French of England into account does not simply add new material to our existing narratives of medieval English culture, but changes them, restoring a multi-vocal, multi-cultural medieval England in all its complexity, and opening up fresh agendas for study and exploration.
