Venarde explica que en los años 1000-1300 el número de conventos dentro de Europa se multiplicó por diez. En los siglos XI y XII, las instituciones religiosas para mujeres se desarrollaron de diversas maneras, sobre todo fuera de los movimientos de reforma autoconscientes que han sido el foco tradicional de la historia monástica. No los monjes reformadores, sino los predicadores itinerantes, los obispos y las mujeres y los hombres de las pequeñas aristocracias locales hicieron posible la fundación de nuevos conventos.
