In the 1770s and 1770s, an extended discussion arose between geographers concerning the identity of the Solomon Islands. In 1781 Jean-Nicolas Buache - nephew of the geographer Philippe Buache - addressed the French Académie Royale des Sciences on the existence and location of the islands, discussing the discoveries of Carteret, Bougainville and Surville. His address contained calculations suggesting the area in which the Solomon Islands would be found, and among the instructions that were later given to La Pérouse for investigation during his voyage of discovery was the examination of this region (the La Pérouse expedition foundered before it reached the islands). Buache's memoir was later included as an appendix to Fleurieu's Découvertes des Français en 1768 et 1769 (Paris 1790). In Britain, Alexander Dalrymple held the view that the Solomon Islands were identical with Dampier's New Britain. The present article by Buache considers Dalrymple's view, illustrated by two folding plates with a map showing New Guinea as shown by the explorations of Tasman, Dampier, Cartaret, and Bougainville, and reproductions from maps of the same area by Robert Dudley (1647), Tattonus (1600) and Dalrymple's plan as found in Forrest's Voyages. Buache's article prompted a rejoinder from Dalrymple, Considerations on M. Buache's Memoir concerning New-Britain and the North Coast of New-Guinea (London, 1790).

Called the "The Father of Indian Surveying" (Susan Gole, Early Maps of India). He charted the currents through the Indian Ocean and around Africa, and later surveyed the Indian interior. Rennell's first map of Hindoostan was the result of 500 separate surveys. The present volume includes his second great work, a 4-sheet map which the DNB described as "the first approximately correct map of India." James Rennell, born in Chudleigh, Devon, England, was a prominent 18th-century cartographer who joined the British Navy at 14, gaining expertise in marine surveying during the Seven Years' War. At 24, he became the surveyor of the British East India Company's territories in Bengal, and in 1765, he began the first comprehensive surveys of India. Rennell's work combined data from British military expeditions with historical sources like the Ain-e-Akbari, a 1598 Mughal administrative manual, allowing him to map India according to its Mughal provincial divisions. His pioneering surveys significantly advanced British geographical knowledge of India, bridging a crucial gap before the era of direct British rule under Queen Victoria. Pour établir cette nouvelle carte - la dernière en date étant celle gravée sous la responsabilité de Bellin en 1766 -, on a utilisé les relations des voyages de Claret de Fleurieu (1773), Verdun de la Crenne, Borda et Pingré (1778) et Chastenet de Puységur (qui était rentré en France en 1785). Parmi les autres sources, on trouve les travaux et les relations de Chabert, Cassini, Cook, etc. Sont successivement étudiés les côtes d'Europe et d'Afrique, les Açores, les Canaries, les îles du Cap Vert, Terre-Neuve, le golfe de Saint-Laurent et le Canada, Cuba, la Jamaïque, Saint-Domingue, Puerto-Rico, les Antilles et les côtes de l'Amérique méridionale (dont Cayenne).Bel exemplaire portant les armes de Louis XVI et la mention "Conseil de la Marine". On sait que Louis XVI, passionné par les voyages et les découvertes scientifiques, venait d'envoyer La Pérouse dans le Pacifique afin de compléter les renseignements rapportés par Cook.
