In the 1940s Encyclopedia Britannica released a series of books, nearly thirty in number, under the aegis of The Library Research Service. which were intended as supplementary self instruction for a number of topics. This particular volume of "Britannica Home Reading Guide" is "English Literature", published in 1944. The book, measuring approximately 8" x 10 3/4", features a handsome photograph of George Bernard Shaw on the front cover. The text is formatted to look typewritten, and it was likely mimeographed. It was, after all, wartime production, with materials being constrained by the demands of the Second World War. The whole affair looks like an outline, but it is an excellent introduction to English literature, going into some detail that might well be missed by more modern books.
