Carl E. "Bunny" Schultze (1866-1939) was an American cartoonist best known for his comic "Foxy Grandpa." First published in the New York Herald in 1900, Foxy Grandpa found immediate success. From 1902 it was published in the New York American, until it the comic ceased to be a regular in 1918. According to the introduction by Edward Marshall, the Sunday editor of the New York Herald, Foxy Grandpa was intended to subvert the typical format of comic strips, in which the young people were the ones playing tricks and being clever. Rather, Foxy Grandpa is the star of his own strip, pulling harmless pranks on his two grandsons. As Marshall describes him, he is the "Mr Pickwick of the comic papers" and is "a clean, fine old fellow, as jolly as can be, and the very kind of an old gentleman that grown people as well as children must not only smile at but admire.". Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. A scarce copy of this comic strip by the renowned American newspaper cartoonist Carl E. Schultze, or, as he is best known, 'Bunny'. This work features Schultze's most popular character, 'Foxy Grandpa', who made his first appearance in 1900 in a gag-a-day newspaper comic strip. The strip revolved around the eponymous Foxy Grandpa, and his two mischievous grandsons Chub and Buntm, with the humour deriving from the two grandsons constantly trying to trick Foxy Grandpa. However, he always managed to get the better of the two boys; combining brains with a perverse sense of humor, and a great deal of acrobatic skill, to outmaneuver their tricks. This copy has been dated using the copyright information to the first page of text: 'Copyright, 1902, by L. R. Hammersly Co, Copyright, 1905, by M. A. Donohue and Co.' In the publisher's original binding, with green cloth spine and illustrated card boards. Externally, generally smart with bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Cloth to head and tail of joints partially split and worn. The odd mark and creasing to boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages age toned but bright and clean throughout. Prior owner's ink inscription to first page of text. Very Good. Bunny [Carl E. Schultze] (illustratore). book.…

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. White card wraps have color illustration and title. Wraps show smudges, creasing especially at center line, staining, edgewear. Corners are worn and softened, top corner missing a 3/4" chip. See photos. Spine is green cloth; ends are split and frayed. See photos. Stapled binding is intact but fragile. Back cover is loose. Illustrations are bright and clear. Interior is gently age-toned. Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. Opening/ Presentation page is toned, exhibits signs of wear and handling, with creases, closed tears at page edge. See photos. Text block edges are softened.** PS2024.0507** 71 pages. 15 x 9 inches** A complete and intact copy of this very scarce comic compendium, of which only four institutional holdings are shown in Worldcat. The covers of this oblong quarto are creased and fragile, but the staple binding is intact, and the cartoons, printed on one side only, are clear and bright.** This 1902 collection includes "all the merry pictures contained in the two volumes Entitled 'Adventures of Foxy Grandpa,' and 'Further adventures of Foxy Grandpa,'" drawn by Carl Emil Schultze (1866?-1939), known to all by his pen name Bunny. Foxy Grandpa was first pubished in January 1900 in the New York Herald, later moving to the New York American in 1902.** The novelty of Foxy Grandpa, who shared panel space with his two grandsons, was its inverting of the common trope of the doddering old man. In these cartoons, Foxy Grandpa is the clever one, who either gets the best of his grandsons or else extricates them from the predicaments they find themselves in. Foxy Grandpa was extremely popular, and the success of the comic made Schultze a rich and famous man, albeit only for a brief period.** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight.
