Condition Report Externally Spine - fair to good condition - elaborately decorated spines with gilt titles to green labels, gilt volume numbers to brown oval labels (lacking to Vol I), rubbed and worn with loss to gilt and labels. Joints - good condition - structurally strong, cracks starting to the base of the rear joint of Vol I, top of the front joint of Vol II, and top of the front joint of Vol III. Corners - good condition - worn and bumped. Boards - good condition - tree calf, marked and worn with some loss. Page edges - good condition - darkened to the top, tanned. Binding - good condition - solid. See above and photos. Internally Hinges - good condition - sound. Paste downs - good condition - marbled paper, bookplate. Richard Burn (1709-1785) received his LLD at Oxford University; he was the vicar of Orton and later the justice of the peace for the counties of Westmoreland and Cumberland. This work is considered to be the most useful book ever published on the law relating to justices of the peace; laws relating to evidence, books, ships, marriage, arrests and corn are among the many referenced in this work (DNB pg.377). This set is complete in five volumes, we do not have the separately-published 1823 Supplement. Bound in half vellum leather, with marbled boards, damp damage to the rear board, discoloured and warped but not badly so (see photos). Red morocco spine labels with gilt lettering, marbled endpapers, the author's Preface to this edition is followed by the Preface to the First Edition, then an Advertisement Concerning the Fifteenth Edition, an Introduction, a Table of Abbreviations, at which point the text begins with "Accessary"; octavo size (approximately 8.25" tall), approximately 4000 pages for all five volumes. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles to red labels with nice clean vellum spines, the rear cover of Vol 1 is just visibly impacting the spine label and top corner. Joints very good condition solid. Corners good condition bumped with minor wear. Boards fair to good condition marbled, with the aforementioned damage to Vol 1 rear board. Page edges good condition plain. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition solid. Paste downs very good condition marbled, rear of vol 1 damp affected.
