Dust jacket complete and unclipped. Laminated boards. 107, xliv pages clean and tight. Geoffrey Burnaby, a public schoolboy aged 18, kept his illustrated diary throughout the year 1912 for a bet with his elder brother. The last entry in the diary records his satisfaction at having won the bet: "John owes me 6d.". Besides his drawing skill, Geoffrey was a talented pianist and a humorous mimic. Four years later, he died of wounds sustained in the Battle of the Somme, and another promising young life was lost to The War to End All Wars. G. V. Burnaby, who has edited this book, is the diarist's nephew. Born 15 years after his uncle's death, he came to know him while a child through the diary, which was always called "Uncle Geoffrey's Diary". Geoffrey's time in 1912 was divided between the sixth form at Haileybury College in Hertfordshire and holiday activities with his family at their home in northeast Suffolk. Although his father had died in 1908, it was a time of fulfilment and hope for the Burnaby family: both his elder brothers had won classical scholarships to Cambridge, and would go on to be Fellows of their Colleges. Geoffrey was neither dogged nor brilliant at school, but his diary shows hire to have been a likeable, normal boy, with a wealth of friends and interests; secure in a supportive and loving family. With an appreciative Foreword by the present Master of Haileybury, the book will appeal particularly to Old Haileyburians. Many others will be attracted by the combination of witty drawings and text, specially the drawings which sometimes take over completely and tell their own story. Size: 7.5"by 12" Tall.
