Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) was a famed British explorer and writer known for travels and explorations in Africa, Asia, and South America. At age 18, Burton joined the Bombay Army with India under British colonial rule. He served as an officer for 18 years. Subsequently he was engaged by the Royal Geographical Society and tasked with exploring the Eastern Africa coast during which time he led an expedition to locate the source of the Nile and becoming the first European to see Lake Tangyanika. Regarding this book, in 1863 he was sent to Dahomey, a powerful West African kingdom to meet with it's King Gelele as a representative if Great Britain. He brough gifts and medical support to Gelele with the aim of ending the slave trade and the human sacrifices and horrid tortures of captives they practiced while preserving Britain's interests and the goal of establishing lawful commerce.…
