The condition of the books is very good (many fine, only a few poor). NONESUCH PRESS COLLECTION. In 1923 Nonesuch was founded by Francis Meynell - its 1st publisher/designer. In 1952 he invited Max Reinhardt to be managing director and publisher. After Meynell's death in 1975, Max continued that role till 1986 when he bought the Press, publishing till 1990 - its last owner/publisher. Already owner of The Bodley Head that he revolutionised, he was an able successor of Meynell's desire to produce fine, readable, books at more affordable prices than most private presses. So, this is the personal collection of Max Reinhardt, begun many years before he joined the Press. By his own death in 2002, it held all titles published for sale in the UK from 1923-1990, the most complete assembled, I believe. Using the catalogue in John Dreyfus's History of the Nonesuch Press, I count 182 books and 26 Prospectuses. Some of the small number of privately published and US titles are present but not complete. We can supply a list identifying items present. The scarcest is the 1953 Coronation Shakespeare (no 119, Dreyfus). A remarkable edition of Shakespeare both for best scholarship and production. Its primary issue was only 1/4 copies bound in limp vellum - one presented to the Queen; one for Francis, whereabouts unknown; two for Max, one of which is here; and one elsewhere. Only Meynell's copy of this tiny issue could have previously appeared for sale. The unlimited trade edition is present here too. The most magisterial is the controversial 1937 Nonesuch Dickens (no 108, Dreyfus), nonetheless considered the finest of Dickens Works produced. With the books are 50 linear cms of at times spirited letters between Reinhardt, Meynell & trade members from 1952-1975 and with Alix, Francis's wife, to 1990 discussing all matters to do with their craft, promotion, production, distribution, sales & legal. The body language of aesthetic choice. Given the international reputation of the Press, it forms an unusually extended and detailed picture of quality book production and publishing in the 2nd half of the 20thC - for this press particularly, as all its earlier records were destroyed at the start of WW2. There are near 700 signed items from Meynell, many more from Reinhardt in copy, many from Brooke Crutchley of Cambridge UP; Vivian Ridler from OUP; some to and from Geoffrey Keynes; Stephen Potter, etc. And with Alix Meynell. There is biographical material on Francis & his publishing life including Pelican Press which he ran with Stanley Morrison; several of his own books and articles, and FM's annotated typescript of his autobiography, My Lives, addressed to Max, who published it.

HP loose leaf post-binder, nickel-plated screw-posts at gutter margin, recent calf covering the flexible calf originals, retaining the stamping on rear pastedown dated 1904-1905, still a very good exemplar. This exceptional salesman sample photo album opens with a striking photograph of Kewanee steam boilers, firebox boilers, and steam boiler fittings sprawled across a warehouse yard, next to the historic J.W. Jenkins Music Co. building, and with overhead hoist track running the length of the yard. The remainder of the album focuses primarily on all of the different buildings, and boiler inventory numbers, or specifications indicated on the labels on versos, with 18 or nearly 20% devoted to hospitals, nursing facilities, and sanitariums featured. These include St. Joseph's Hospital (near today's River Club) which was the first private hospital in Kansas City, MO, and this 1910 facility featured one of the first specialty X-Ray departments; as well as the Osteopath College, "Skarritt Hospital" which was the Skarritt Bible & Training School for nurses, women missionaries, and deaconesses, first established in 1892; the Osteopathic Hospital, originally Wesley Hospital, later taken over by the War Dept.; Nurses Home at 27th & Paseo; Mercy Hospital, or Children's Mercy Hospital at 1750 Independence, and now serving as Kansas City Univ. Administration Building, and Grace Hospital at 9th & Harrison. Of particular interest are the photos depicting such historic buildings as: Wheatley-Provident Colored Hospital, now the sole surviving hospital building in Kansas City that was established and run by the African-American community from 1902-1972, located at 1826 Forest, and was one of the first hospitals in the U.S. entirely staffed by African-American doctors, nurses, and administrators; the Willows Maternity Sanitarium, which originally opened in 1905 in a Victorian home, but was moved to the Asa Maddox mansion and converted to a maternity hospital by 1911. The Willows provided unwed pregnant daughters of middle-class and affluent families a place to give birth away from public scrutiny before offering the children for adoption. Many of the young women were forced to enter their home by their parents as they did not support the daughter marrying the father of their child, due to religious or cultural differences. Sadly, nearly all of the records were later entirely destroyed after the Sanitarium closed. Another notable is the photo of the newly built Leeds Kansas City Tuberculosis Hospital, a 2-story concrete facility that operated from 1915 until 1964, and was later demolished in 1971. It was designed by E.P. Majorie and included wide porches, long sleeping wards, but unfortunately was continually poorly run with significant funds continually diverted to feed the coffers of the Pendergast political machine. "Girls Homes" for young orphan girls, displaced homeless children, as well as unwed teenagers are also depicted, such as the St. Joseph Orphan Home, operated as an Orphan Girl's Home, but actually also served to temporarily house children for parents unable, or incapable of caring for their children, including those where the children were being abused, or in danger. Those for boys and young man included the Kansas City Country Day School, launched through the reform efforts of Cassie James Ward HIll (now the quadrangle of the Pembroke Hill School-Ward Parkway Campus); or, the Boys Hotel at Admiral & Highland where self-supporting working boys were assigned to live until they a.
