Condizione: VERY GOOD. First US printing. A Crime Club selection. An Inspector Arnold mystery, published in the UK as 'This Undesirable Residence.' An uncommon title by this writer (who also wrote mysteries under the name of John Rhode.) Pencilled notation indicating that this was from a store's lending library - stamp of store on endpaper, but no other markings. The dustjacket was originally covered by an old-style protector with black edges - and these black edges left some marks on the endpapers. Otherwise the book is in very good condition and the dustjacket is in exceptionally good condition - bright and attractive with only the slightest bit of fading to the red on the spine, and a small amount of dampstaining visible on the upper corner of the front flap.

Third printing of the 1928 first edition. Publisher's original red cloth with black titles to the upper board and spine, in the Abbey illustrated dustwrapper. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the very good rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that has a small chip to the top right corner of the spine and remnants of a paper label over the 3/6 printed publisher's price. The artwork is the same as that of the first printing. An attractive example of an uncommon early Dr. Priestley title in dustwrapper. (Hubin). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Hard Cover. Condizione sovraccoperta: Dust Jacket. First Edition. (London: Published for THE CRIME CLUB by COLLINS 1941), First UK Edition in dustwrapper priced 8/- net to the inside flap. Publisher's orange cloth with title and author stamped in black on the spine and 'The Crime Club' stamped in black at the base of the spine. 252 pp +4p ads, 8vo. Boards exceptionally bright and clean. No inscriptions. Spine tips bruised and a faint crease to the spine overall a near fine copy. The complete dustwrapper (by the noted artist, Stead) is also in near fine condition with the white portions of the spine just a shade darkened. This story has an attractive country setting in a war-time village, complete with Home Guard, wardens and special constabulary. It was the Author's first under the 'Miles Burton' pseudonym to fully feature a wartime background. "This one is a very strong entry in the series with good detection, a little more character development than Burton is usually credited for and an absolutely convincing war time backdrop something one might expect from the author's military background. Here he uses that knowledge, particularly in intelligence and espionage, to provide several details regarding subjects like the passing of messages and laying of false clues that are no doubt based in reality. Like many Burton's of this period this is a notoriously difficult book to track down, with copies extremely scarce.it's an excellent mystery and one of the very best from the Golden Age at combining great detection with a credible wartime environment (WordPress). I have not handled another example of this book since the millennium. It is of legendary scarcity. Further photographs available upon request.

Hard Cover. Condizione sovraccoperta: Dust Jacket. First Edition. (London: Published for THE CRIME CLUB by COLLINS nd [1940]), First UK Edition (undated issue) in the rare and correct dustwrapper (blank front flap corner over-stamped with '4/- net'). Publisher's orange cloth with title and author stamped in black on the spine and 'The Crime Club' stamped in black at the base of the spine. 252 pp +3p ads, 8vo. A very good plus copy (fading at foot of spine corresponding to dustwrapper historic loss; pale foxing spots to end-papers; small stains to pp.14-17) in a dustwrapper that now shows as a very good plus example with neat and expert archival conservation to head and foot of spine with the bottom inch or so of the spine panel (including the publisher's name) supplied in facsimile. The dustwrapper shows some overall dust-soiling to its cream areas; and several small chips and closed tears have been neatly restored all done by a highly-skilled paper conservator. NB: As with other undated Crime Clubs from around 1940 that we have handled (Bermuda Burial by C Daly King being a notable example) the front flap was initially blank and is here overprinted with the lower price. NNB: We have specialised in collecting and building Golden Age detective fiction collections for more than 25 years and this is only the second example of this rare title that we have handled. It is of legendary scarcity especially in dustwrapper. "The 'Miles Burton' mysteries are most commonly associated with rural and seaside locations, which, to the modern reader, provide a fascinating window into an England which has now changed radically from what it was in the first half of the 20th Century. It is always interesting, therefore, when most of the action here is centred on the busy metropolis of London, where Inspector Arnold is employed at Scotland Yard and Desmond Merrion keeps rooms in St. James. In this entry in the series, published in 1940, the focus is less on the persistence of village traditions or the conflicts of a closed community, with the series sleuths confronted by a complex puzzle of motives, opportunities and alibis. This one will particularly appeal to lovers of the Croftsian school of detective fiction. Arnold is less slow-witted than he often is in these mysteries, where he only tends to shine when he investigates alone. Despite nominating the most obvious suspect as he often does he shows a little more willingness to consider other possibilities. Merrion too directs his suspicions in the wrong direction at first, before eventually constructing a complex theory and demonstrating it to the baffled Inspector". (WordPress).
