Johann Friedrich Bury war einer der »Künstlerburschen«, mit denen Goethe in den Jahren 1786 bis 1788…am römischen Corso zusammenlebte. Zu seiner Zeit war er ein gefragter Porträtmaler, auch wenn sein Name in kunstgeschichtlichen Untersuchungen heute nur am Rande auftaucht. Die Germanistik kennt ihn als eine der zahlreichen Figuren aus Goethes Italienischer Reise. In Weimar hat sich ein Konvolut von insgesamt fünfzig Briefen erhalten, die Bury zwischen 1788 und 1798 an Goethe sowie an die Herzoginmutter Anna Amalia schrieb - ein Glücksfall. Diese Briefe aus Italien werden nun erstmals veröffentlicht und kommentiert vorgelegt. Sie zeigen eine individuelle Malerbiographie auf der Schwelle zwischen Klassizismus und Romantik aus nächster Nähe. Mit seinen Berichten gibt Bury darüber hinaus ebenso interessante wie amüsante Einblicke in ein Künstlerleben im Rom des 18. Jahrhunderts.
