8vo. xv, 278 pp. Bibliography, index. Black paper-backed boards, gilt-stamped spine, dust-jacket; top front jacket slightly rubbed. Bookplate. Very good. ISBN: 1840142820 This is a fundamental re-assessment of the world-view of the alchemists, natural philosophers and intelligencers of the mid-17th century. Based almost entirely… upon the extensive and hitherto little-researched manuscript archive of Samuel Hartlib, it charts and contextualises the personal and intellectual history of Johann Moriaen (c.1592-1668), a Dutch-German alchemist and natural philosopher. Moriaen was closely acquainted with many of the leading thinkers and experimenters of his time, including Rene Descartes, J.A. Comenius, J.R. Glauber and J.S. Küffler. His detailed reports of relations with these figures and his response to their work provide a uniquely informed insight into the world of alchemy and natural philosophy. This study also illuminates the nature and mechanisms of intellectual and technological exchanges between Germany, The Netherlands and England. â" publisher. / The German minister, physician, natural philosopher and would-be alchemical adept Johann Moriaen was born in Nurnberg in 1591. By 1633 he was involved in practical aspects of optics and Paracelsian chemistry and medicine. In 1657 he is recorded as the owner of a scarlet dye works in Hulkestein near Arnhem. CONTENTS: Part 1: Johann Moriaen: A Biographical Sketch 1. Servant of the Church 2.Servant of God 3. An Intelligencer's Ethos Part 2: Universal Wisdom 4. Panaceas of the Soul: Comenius and the Dream of Universal Knowledge 5. Curing Creation: Alchemy and Spirituality 6. Universal Medicines: Johann Rudolph Glauber and his Reception in England 7. Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: Good. Folio (328 x 212 mm), contemporary limp vellum, a clean and well-preserved copy (inscription from a conventual library on title, shelf mark label on spine). Woodcut printer's device on title and on final leaf, many woodcuts (3 full-page), including 5 illustrations of ancient lyres, tables and diagram…s, folding diagram tipped onto p.120, type-set musical examples, and 2 engraved musical tables on pp. 71 and 78. (Occasional light spotting and faint staining, final leaf with tiny burn hole and repair at top corner). Second edition of this illustrated treatise on music by Galileo's father Vincenzo, first published in 1581. The work takes issue with standard contemporary mathematical models of consonance and argues for the superiority of ancient Greek monody over later polyphony. In 1588 Vincenzo was attacked in print by his former tutor, the noted venetian theorist and Gioseffo Zarlino (1517-1590), whose name appears on the title-page of this second edition of the Dialogo. Vincenzo Galilei's musical work 'foreshadowed the subordination of mathematics to experience and the discovery of unexpected laws through close observation that was to distinguish science in the seventeenth century from its predecessors' (DSB). Carli-Favaro 1; Cinti 6 (first edition); RISM Écrits 344.
