Aggiungi al carrellopaperback. Condizione: Good. Vintage Penguin First Edition. #S192. The Trial of Lady Chatterley, edited by C.H. Rolph, is a documentary-style account of the 1960 Old Bailey obscenity trial over D.H. Lawrenceâs *Lady Chatterleyâs Lover*, presented through transcripts, commentary and contextual material. Rolph assembles the prosec…ution and defence arguments, witness statements from academics, clergy and literary figures, and the judgeâs summing-up, allowing the reader to follow the case as it unfolded and to see how questions of morality, literary merit and social change collided in the courtroom. The volume also situates the trial within the broader cultural moment, showing how the verdict helped redefine attitudes toward censorship and modern literature, and in its Penguin edition it offers a clear, engaging record of one of the twentieth centuryâs most influential legal battles over a book.

In England, about 1960, one wasn't to write such words as balls, shit, arse, cock or piss in a WORK of literary or artistic merit. This is a Limited edition of 2000 copies, which is numbered & signed by Allen Lane the book publisher who founded Penguin Books with his brothers. / In 1960, thirty years after D. H. Forster and Sir Allen Lane to triumphantly defend the book's literary merit, in a case that compellingly reflected the changing face of contemporary society. With illustrations by Paul Hogarth. / This is a 1st edition hardback with its dustjacket in good condition-the dustjacket is marked. (294 pages).

Aggiungi al carrello8vo, 2 pp, 33 lines. Good, on lightly aged and creased paper. An interesting letter, written by a former policeman to a former probation officer, on the subject of the latter's book 'Come to Prison: A Tour through British Prisons today' (Longmans, 1957), about which the former has written a negative review. Begins by praising St…okes' 'really generous letter, written at what cost in self-control I can only dimly imagine'. When Hewitt 'read the published review', he thought 'that it was still on the whole unfair'. 'I hate reviewing really, and am a bad reviewer. Objectivity eludes me, and I pontificate, as if I were the only man in the world with the knowledge of the subject.' He claims what he 'really thought' was that 'the name of Sewell Stokes commands respect'. He remembers 'how very impressed G. W. Stonier was years ago with Court Circular, though I thought that book was unfair!' He is writing 'an Observer "profile" ' of Sir Lionel Fox, whom they both admire. Concludes 'I'm afraid your very readable book will be a success, despite the price!'.
