Spine cracked and with pink blank label at top. Some soiling and dampstaining in margins on title leaf. Signature of Ulrica Christina Nordin. A nice copy….Plates drawn by Palmstruch and engraved by C. W. Venus. The printed wrappers, which are lacking here, with the enlarged title: "samt något till upplysning om det längesedan utdöda mammot- eller behemotdjuret." Disturbed by the misconceptions about the elephant among the public, Quensel wrote this pamphlet in connection with the first visit of such an animal in Sweden. It arrived by boat from Åbo to Stockholm in 1804 and belonged to the menagerie of Gautier and Agazzi, who, apart from the elephant, displayed a baboon and several other mammals and birds. The menagerie stayed in Stockholm for almost two years, with daily shows in the baracks which had been specially made for the occasion at Brunkebergstorg. The climate took a toll on the exotic animals and the elephant suffered from the cold. Quensel's description makes it clear that its physical status had become poor due to extended travelling and the confined life in the menagerie. The elephant could however still perform some tricks, such as greeting the audience by falling to its knees, carrying a burning candle and pulling the cork out of a bottle to consume its content. In November 1804 the shows were cancelled because the elephant, after having been kept awake for months, had fallen asleep.
