There are also views of Adelaide (Rundle Street looking east, King William Street, Adelaide Arcade), Gippsland Lakes, R.M.S. Orizaba, portraits of Aboriginal Australians by Nicholas Caire ("Lubras' Camp, Maloga," "King Billy, Maloga," men spear fishing), gold miners, loggers, horse cart drivers, &c. Over a dozen views of Tasmania show a coastal lighthouse, the town of Strahan (by Albert Sargeant), Hobart (general views, harbour, Government House), Cape Raoul, country roads, "Huts at the Springs," "Fren Tree Bower," &c. Two smaller photos at the rear show the wharf at a Pacific island with the advertising of "Burns, Philp & Co. Ltd." The album also contains four mounted real photo and printed postcards, showing the ocean steamers, which took the travellers on different legs of their journey: from Ceylon to Australia (R.M.S. "Oceania"), from Melbourne to Tasmania (T.S.S. "Loongana"), from Sydney to Hong Kong and thence to New York and Liverpool. Overall an important, content-rich album of early, well-preserved photographs of Australia and Tasmania, by local studios. "Greenham and Evans was a commercial photographic company. It had studios in the following locations: Sylvester Street, Coolgardie 1895; Barrack Street, Perth 1895-96; 175 Barrack Street, Perth 1897; 151 Barrack Street, Perth 1898-1900 (Davies and Stanbury 1985, p.171). The company was eventually owned by Denis Brown Dease who arrived in Perth from Melbourne in 1893 (Cato 1955, p.179)". ( University of Cambridge ). "Henry King was born at Swanage in Dorset, England, and brought to Australia as a baby. Very little is known of his early years, apart from what can be gleaned from registers and directories: he served an apprenticeship under photographer J Hubert Newman, married Elizabeth Laing in 1879 and then entered into a partnership with William Slade. In 1880 Slade and King established a photographic studio at 316 George Street, Sydney, which Slade later continued as sole proprietor. King, while making his living through portraiture, eventually became known for landscapes, his images of the 'vanishing race' of Aborigines and the documentary photography which he undertook for institutions such as the AGNSW, the Australian Museum and the General Post Office (G.P.O.). By 1901 King was regarded by the 'Australasian Photo-" as 'one of the oldest and one of the most successful photographers in New South Wales ? a household word'." ( Art Gallery of New South Wales ). "Nicholas John Caire was born in Guernsey on February 28th 1837. His family, who were of Scottish descent, emigrated to Adelaide circa 1858. Caire pursued his interest as a photographer while working as a hairdresser (Turner 1996, p.392). He studied photography under Townsend Duryea and became a travelling photographer. Caire made a photographic tour of Gippsland in 1865 (Cato 1955, p.76-79). In 1865-68 he had a studio at 97 Hindley Street, Adelaide. In 1870 he married Louisa Master and moved his business to Scandinavian Crescent, Talbot, Victoria (Pike 1969, p.328; Davies and Stanbury 1985, p.140). From 1872-75 he was based at View Place, Sandhurst (now Bendigo), Victoria. In 1876 Caire purchased the Melbourne studio of Thomas F. Chuck. In 1880 he was active at 11 Royal Arcade, Bourke Street, Melbourne (Davies and Stanbury 1985, p.140). In the same year he was one of three official photographers to the Melbourne International Exhibition and he was later made photographer by special appointment to the government of Victoria (Turner 1996, p. 393). In 1885 Caire moved to 2 Darling Street, South Yarra. He occupied various studios in South Yarra until circa 1900 (Davies and Stanbury 1985, p.140). In 1888 he made a photographic expedition to Mt. Buffalo, organized by the Alpine Society (Turner 1996, p.392)." ( University of Cambridge ).  .

Very large format albumen print photograph, 215 x 270 mm; dated in manuscript in negative lower left '1 Jan 1874'; the verso has a contemporary inscription in pencil 'No. 1' and a straight-line wet stamp in green ink whose lettering is unfortunately indecipherable; the print has three vertical folds, with a short tear at the bottom edge of the central fold; the photograph is preserved in the previous owner's archival mat, on which she wrote in pencil 'Nicholas Caire mount' - presumably, this is a reference to the remnants of a mount that must have perished. The scrubby, scarred landscape certainly makes it possible that this fabulous outdoor group portrait was taken somewhere on the Central Goldfields. Nicholas Caire was living and working in Sandhurst (Bendigo) at this time. There was a surprisingly large number of social events held in Bendigo on New Year's Day, 1874 - in fact, if truth be told, there was probably more entertainment on offer than there would be today. We believe the men in our photograph could have been attending the Oddfellows Picnic on the Campaspe River near Runnymede, to the northeast of Bendigo. A clue to their identity, though, might be found in the presence of the distinguished Indian gentleman who is prominent in the centre of the back row. On that morning - 1 January 1874 - a journalist in the Bendigo Advertiser gave a summary of all the local events that would take place in the day and evening: 'ODDFELLOWSPICNIC.The Oddfellows hold their annualpicnictoday, on the banks of the Campaspe, at Runnymede, and as the place is easily attainable byrail, and is a very pleasant place, and numerousamusements are to be provided, it is expectedthat there will be a large attendance.EAGLEHAWK FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.The Friendly Societies, of Eaglehawk, holdsports at the Botanic Gardens' reserve, Eaglehawk. A procession of the societies willstart from the Town Hall for the Gardens in the forenoon. Innocent sports andgames of all descriptions will be provided, sothat visitors will have every opportunity ofenjoying themselves.PROMENADE CONCERTS AND BALLSThere is to be a promenade concert at theSydenham Gardens given by Nicholl?s fineband while in the Oddfellows' Hall in theevening, Hallas?s City Band will give a promenade Concert. At Nissen's European Hotel, theBendigoDeutsche Liedertafel hold their firstanniversary ball in the evening.THEATRES. .At St. James' Hall Miss Blanch Stammers'and Mr. Garner will appear in the elegantcomedy of " The Happy Pair," and this will befollowed by the pantomime of "RobinsonCrusoe." At the Theatre Royal there will be avaried entertainment, concluding with the pantomime of " Beauty and the Beast."THE NEW YEAR'S RIFLE MATCHESThe annual meeting of theBendigoRiflestakes place to-day at the Back Creek Butts.Firing commences at 9 a.m., and as there arefive distinct matches, shooting will not concludebefore 6 p.m. From the number of entriesmade for the handicap matches there will, nodoubt, be a large gathering of our riflemen atthe Butts. That portion of the public also whotake an interest in shooting will, it is expected, pay a visit during the day to the convincingground. The Ladies' Trophy, which was subscribed for by the ladies of Sandhurst, consistsof a handsome silver tea and coffee service, andis on view at Mr. M. W. Bent's, Pall Mall. Thefiring for this, the principal prize, will commence about half-past one o'clock. Prizes of the total value of about £35 are to he competedfor.' Provenance: Private collection of Joyce Evans OAM (1929-2019), Melbourne.

Albumen print photograph, 280 x 230 mm, laid down on its original album leaf of thin card, with a fully contemporary pencilled caption in French beneath the image: 'Splitters fall (partie du milieu) haute 200 pieds'; a strong print with good tonal range, slight yellowing at edges; in very good condition (tiny amount of loss at bottom right corner, probably pre-dating the mounting). The State Library of Victoria holds another copy of this view (PCLTAF ; 302 P.16; in identical format, titled Foot of Splitter's Falls), which it dates to 1879-1881. Albumen print photograph, 183 x 131 mm, mounted on a leaf of thick card removed from a 19th-century album, inscribed in ink on the mount '"Hanging Rock", Mount Macedon, Vic.'; some insignificant spotting confined to the edges of the image, otherwise a strong print with excellent tonal range, in very good condition. A very early photographic view of one of the most romanticised beauty spots in Victoria. The National Gallery of Victoria (Accession Number PH106.6-1988) holds another print of the same image, which it dates to around 1876. It is on the original mount with Caire's printed information, as follows: VIEW OF THE "HANGING ROCK," NEAR MOUNT MACEDON. / COPYRIGHT REGISTERED.
