Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Nunc in gratiam, & Commodum quorumvis Virorum Ecclesiasticorum. Dominicus Ac Festis, Ad formandas facile Dictiones Ecclesiasticas a Francisco Salesio Gailler. Cum Privilegio Sacrae Saesareae Mejestatis, & Facultate Superiorum. Augustae Vindelicorum Sumptibus Martini Veith, Bibliopolae. Anno MDCCXL. 2 folio volumes. Sermons by Caesare Calino on the book of Samuel. Both volumes are bound in full, original, leather. Title pages handsomely printed in black and red. Rubberstamps on the title pages that say, "Bibliotheca Domus Congr. Redempt. Ab St. Jacobum Baltimb." Bookplates on inside front cover are printed and handwrittin to say, "Bibl. C. SS. R. Ad S. Jacobum, Baltimori. Num 308 Lit. D." (volume 2 is num. 309.) Volume 1 is 576 pages + separately paginated "Tractatus Theologiae Moralis de Lusu" 54 pages + index. Volume 2 is 638 pages + index. Although it is not stated in the books, Martini Veith was published in Augsburg, which is in southern Bavaria, which itself is in southern Germany. Augsburg is the second oldest city in Germany. The publishers Martini and Veith seem to have remained in business only during the 1730s. This set, printed in 1740, is the latest title I can find with their imprint. I have not been able to unravel the mystery of the bookplates and rubberstamps. There is an old St. Jacob's church in Maryland, but it's not in Baltimore. The books were published a generation before US independence, but I haven't been able to place them in the US at the time of the war but there are clues that might shed light on that. When did institutions start using rubberstamps and bookplates? Both volumes have a few nice, dark, woodblock decorations or ornamented initials. Text is in Latin, two columns, with nice wide margins. The bindings are tight and the pages are clean. There is a large 'L' handwritten on the bottom foreedge of the first volume. The leather on the spines of both volumes is chipping or damaged. Foreedges are stippled red. The author Caesare Calino remains obscure. A few other works credited to him were published by other printers in Augsburg in the 1740s. He was likely a Jesuit professor or priest in that college town, where the Jesuits had been established since the sixteenth century. This same title was published in 1737 by the "Academicae Soc. Jesu.", and it is reproduced in facsimile on google dot com slash books.
