All volumes in this series were issued in wraps (soft cover), staple bound. Created to fill a void in the study of very specific areas of Canadian history and biography, each reader contains a wealth of historical information through the characters and events covered. The books are written in a charming and vivid manner. This particular copy is in very good shape, clean and tight, with very minor edgewear and only a touch of age toning.

First edition, THIRD IMPRESSION. Previous impressions were in 1926 and 1927. Dark green cloth covered boards. Front panel and spine have stamped blue, green and gilt images of a Quebec buildings and trees, and stamped gilt lettering. Upper external page edges are gilt. Boards are clean, panel and spine illustrations are crisp. Cream and green illustrated end-papers. Color frontispiece with tissue-guard. Fold-out map of Quebec with blue and orange outlines at beginning of text. Three additional color plates with tissue-guards and numerous additional pages of b&w photographs. Internally clean, no marks or tears. Text block is very snug. Dust jacket and spine have the same images as those of the book. Jacket is sunned overall, heavier on extremities and heaviest on spine. Shelf wear soil and additional stains on spine and back panel. All folds are creased and scuffed and just barely rubbed throng in several places. Loss at front and back corners at head of spine and both upper fore-edge corners, all with adjacent chips and tears - see photos. Front corner at tail of spine has a 1" closed vertical tear along the front spine fold. The price is listed in small writing on the front inside flap under The Spell Series information. There is offsetting to the endpapers. Very good. First edition of this collection of sonnets which won the "Quebec Literary Competition Award" in 1924. Inscribed & signed on the front endpaper in the year of publication by Frank Oliver Call, "To Edith Spruance with kindest regards from the author F.O. Call / Prouts Neck, Aug. 1924". Sections include " A Sonnet Series of French Canada", "From A Walled Garden", and "Simples". The illustrator Orson Wheeler (1902-1990) is best known for his bronze busts. Born in Brome Lake, the Canadian poet Frank Oliver Call (1878-1956) was educated at Bishop's and McGill Universities and was subsequently a professor of language at both institutions. He is regarded as a bridge between early Canadian poets such as Bliss Carman and Duncan Campbell Scott and the modernists such as E.J. Pratt and Dorothy Livesay. His published poetry works include "In a Belgian Garden", "Acanthus and Wild Grape", "Blue Homespun", and "Sonnets for Youth". He also authored Canadian travel works including "The Spell of French Canada" and "The Spell of Acadia".
