Hardcover, cream cloth with black stamped title on spine and black stamped facsimile signature of Bourke-White, on the cover. Margaret Bourke-White (June 14, 1904 August 27, 1971) was an American photographer and documentary photographer. She was the first foreign photographer permitted to take pictures of Soviet industry under the Soviets' first five-year plan, was the first American female war photojournalist, and took the photograph (of the construction of Fort Peck Dam) that became the cover of the first issue of Life magazine. In the summer of 1929 Bourke-White accepted a job as associate editor and staff photographer for the business-themed magazine Henry Luce was starting, Fortune magazine - a position held until 1935. In 1930 she became the first Western photographer allowed to enter the Soviet Union. When Luce began his third magazine, the oversized, photograph-centered Life magazine, in 1936, he hired her as its first female photo- journalist. Bourke-White was the first known female war correspondent, as well as the first woman to be allowed to work in combat zones during World War II. She was "one of the most effective chroniclers" of the violence that erupted at the 1947 independence and partition of India and Pakistan." Carl Mydans (May 20, 1907 August 16, 2004) was an American photographer who worked for the Farm Security Administration and Life magazine. Mydans became devoted to photography while in college at Boston University. His first reporting jobs were for The Boston Globe and the Boston Herald. After college, he went in 1935 to Washington to join a group of photographers in the Farm Security Administration. There he worked with other photographers like Dorothea Lange and Ben Shahn to document the conditions of the American rural workers. In 1936, he joined Life as one of its earliest staff photographers (Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White, Thomas McAvoy and Peter Stackpole were the original staff photographers) and a pioneering photojournalist.
