First edition, presentation copy from the author, inscribed boldly across the half-title in purple pencil, "À Monseigneur le Duc de Chartres hommage respectueux de l'editeur Camille Rousset". The recipient was Prince Robert, Duke of Chartres (1840-1910), his gilt crowned monogram stamped at the foot of the spine. Chartes served briefly on McClellan's staff as an adjutant during the American Civil War and was present at the Confederate victory at Gaines' MIll (27 June 1862). During the Franco-Prussian War, under the pseudonym Robert Le Fort, he saw action with the Armée de la Loire. Camille Rousset was historian to the French Ministry of War. "MacDonald served with the Rhine armies from the time of Valmy. He was a friend of both Moreau and Pichegru, and although he almost certainly was uninvolved in their conspiracy, he was not employed from 1803 to 1809. Thereafter he served in all the campaigns of the Grande Armée" (Sandler). A smart copy with an attractive provenance. Sandler 2179 and Tulard 486 for the French first. Octavo (220 x 133 mm). Photogravure portrait frontispiece and one other similar plate. Contemporary French dark blue quarter calf, spine gilt lettered direct, marbled paper sides, Nonpareil marbled paper sides and endpapers. Lightest rubbing to extremities of binding, scattered foxing. A very good copy, bookseller's ticket of Fontaine, Montmatre.
