Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. xv+248 pages with 16 colour plates (including frontispiece), 6 monochrome plates, 9 maps, appendices, bibliography and index. Small quarto (10" x 7") issued in original dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria blind stamped in gilt on the cover. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society, Third Series, Number 4. Edited by R J Campbell. First edition. In 1819 William Smith, with a general cargo from Montevideo to Valparaiso, sailed further south round Cape Horn than his predecessors, in the hope of finding favorable winds. He sighted land in 62 degrees South. His report to the Senior Naval Officer in Valparaiso was ridiculed, but on a subsequent voyage he confirmed his discovery, taking soundings and sailing along the coast. As a result Captain Shirreff, the Senior Naval Officer, charted his vessel, the brig Williams, and having put Edward Bransfield the master of his ship, HMS Andromache, in charge, sent her to survey the new discovery. Charles Poynter was one of the midshipmen who sailed with Bransfield. His account of this expedition, which forms the principal part of this volume, recently came to light in New Zealand, and is the only first-hand account of the voyage, during which the Antarctic mainland was sighted for the first time, that appears to have survived. The introduction contains some remarks on the South Shetland Islands, followed by chapters giving a brief look at the history of the Spanish in South America and the British presence in the area, together with the speculation leading to the search for Antarctica and chapters on early nineteenth-century navigation and hydrographic surveying. There were several second hand accounts of William Smith's earlier voyages, and Bransfield's expedition which appeared in reports, journals and books at the time. These are included with brief accounts of other voyages to the South Shetland Islands which took place while Bransfield was in the area, to complete the picture. Poynter's journal explains the reasoning behind most of the names given to land features, some of which were not included in the published accounts at the time. There are also three charts and a number of views which are reproduced and an assessment of the accuracy of this short but remarkable voyage to be made. Finally the chart published as a result of Barnsfield's survey is included. Condition: A fine copy in like jacket.

This book was owned and signed by Barrett P. Tyler (Barrett P Tyler, 1909). This was Rev. Barrett Prettyman Tyler (1881 - 1979), who graduated from Yale Divinity School and was minister to several churches, including All Saints Church in Brookline MA; Church of the Redeemer, Morristown, NJ; and St. Paul's, Nantucket MA. Rev. Tyler served as Chaplain during WWI to the U. S. 325th Infantry in France. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as well as a Silver Star - these for, among other things, Gallantry in Action.Tyler was A True American Hero. The book is "Christianity and the Social Order" by Rev. R. J. Campbell (Reginald John Campbell, 1867 - 1956), published by the Macmillan Company, in New York in December of 1907. This is the First American Edition. Campbell was a controversial nonconformist preacher, yet very popular. At the time of this book's issue, he was minister at City Temple in London, and a leading proponent of the "New Theology". "Christianity and the New Order" proceeds to give a fairly detailed study of the Religious situation at the time of Jesus, citing a number of religious influences on Jesus (Persian dualism, Judaism, and Massianism amongst them). He concludes that the Christianity evolved from Jesus was socialist in form, and that the New Theology, if it were to be fully Christian had to partake of socialist philosophy. The second half of the book examines in detail Socialist thinking and its implications for capitalism and labour. This is a very thin recap of what is, essentially, a very complex book. Later in life, During World War I, Rev. Campbell underwent a spiritual crisis, forsook Liberal Protestantism and returned to the traditional Church of England, being ordained therein as an Anglican priest. He ended his career as Chancellor of Chichester Cathedral. TITLE : Christianity and the Social Order AUTHOR : R. J. Campbell (Rev. Reginald John Campbell, 1867 - 1956) IMPRINT : Macmillan Co. PLACE : New York EDITION : First American Edition DATE : December, 1907 PROVENANCE : Original owner was Barrett Prettyman Tyler (Signed & dated : Barrett P Tyler, 1909) Barrett was later to be Chaplain to the U.S. 325th Infantry in France during WWI, He was awarded the Medal of Honor and a Silver Star for Gallantry in Action while there. He ministered in several churches after the war. DETAILS : Trade hardcover; 5 1/8" x 7", black cloth-covered board binding with gilt lettering on spine, and top text-block edge gilt; fore- and bottom edges are rough cut; Has an Introduction. [xiv] + 284 pages, plus 6 blank pages at end. CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Gilt lettering on spine still fairly bright; spine extremities are compressed and display moderate rub; front cover has three whitish scrapes; board edges display rub; top text-block gilt is a bit rubbed, but still bright; fore- and bottom-edges are toned, else clean BINDING -- The book has obviously been read, and is hardly as tight as when issued, opening widely and easily. However, no leaves are detached or loose, the whole holding together securely. INTERIOR -- There is evidence of pencil erasures through the book, but these do no appear egregious, and are not that evident, else the book is clean and free of marking (save for Rev. Tyler's dated signature on the front free end-paper); starting around page 215, some of the bolts are not separated along the bottom edges (ie the leaves are still joined as issued by the publisher. (This was common practice in those days). Prior to that page there is evidence of the original reader (the reverend) having been just slightly uneven in the separation of leaves. Again, as I said, the interior is clean. The end-papers display a touch of foxing.
