Published during the uncertain days of World War Two, most of the verse in this little book had already been printed in a column "Postcripts " in Wellington's Evening Post newspaper. Many of the 100+ verses have a patroitic theme or refer to wartime incidents, actions, campaigns or the home-front. Campbell's poems were first published under his "Crowbar" nom de plume and "Crowbar" is written in ink above the signature "(J Finlay Campbell)" top left on the title page verso.
