The highly interesting narrative, written in the nineteenth century, exclusively deals with the Khonds and other tribes inhabiting the mountain ranges of ancient kingdom of Orissa which can scarcely be recognised in the old dependency of British India now known as the district of Cuttack and which includes a considerable portion of the hill districts or the country of the Khonds. These are peopled generally by Khonds or Kui as they call themselves. According to the author, the Khonds consider themselves the lords and owners of the soil and no tribe will ever part with land for any consideration whatever. As a race they are not remarkable. Men are often well formed and one in every way superior to their women. The appearance, habits, dress and other characteristics of the Khonds point out these people as descendants from the aboriginals of the country. Their Rajas or chieftains are generally uneducated men devoid of all mental culture. In their religion there are traces of primitive elemental worship with the impious practice of human sacrifice which is the foundation of their religion and, saving a very few tribes, the Khonds generally propitiated their diety, always a malevolent being, with human offerings. They are excessively devoted to liqauor and tobacco. The Khond women are scantily clad at the men. The Khonds regard the abduction of a woman by a man of another tribe as a common insult to them all and, unless a reparation be made to the injured husband, war is declared against the tribe of the abducting party. All edges marbled. , General Sir John Campbell KCSI CB (1802 ? 1878) was a Scottish army officer who served in the East India Company and the Indian Army. He was born in Kingsburgh on the Isle of Skye the son of John Campbell of Lochend and his wife, Annabella Campbell of Melfort. He joined the British Army as an ensign in 1819 but instead decided to join the East India Company in 1820, where prospects appeared better. In April 1820 he was appointed a lieutenant in the 41st Madras Native Infantry. He worked in the Madras area until 1830, when he was promoted to captain. In 1834 he was asked to quell a rebellion in the Kimedy hills in the Orissa region. On the death of Major Barclay he commanded the entire force, and was successful in this action. His knowledge of the area meant that he was chosen to lead the troops in the Goomsoor War of 1836/37. At the end of this period he was asked to be governor of the Khonds, the hill tribes of the Orissa, with a special task of trying to end female infanticide in the area. In 1842 he joined his old regiment, the 41st, on a posting to China, and was soon after both promoted to lieutenant colonel and awarded a Commander of the Order of the Bath (CB) in December. However, he was asked to return to Madras and from 1847 resumed control of the Khonds, as his successor was proving ineffective.In 1849 he went to the Cape of Good Hope to improve his health. He returned to India in 1851. In 1853 he was promoted to colonel. He returned to Scotland in 1855 and took up residence in Edinburgh. Although semi-retired he was promoted to major general in 1859. Born on the island of Skye, off the West coast of Scotland, Campbell (1802-1877) joined the East India Company in 1820. In 1834 he was ordered to Odisha to quell an insurrection among the Khonds (the hill tribes inhabiting the Eastern Ghats), returning there in the Goomsoor war of 1836-7. Having accumulated valuable local knowledge Campbell was given charge of the Khonds, with the aim of suppressing the practices of human sacrifice and female infanticide. Without the use of troops Campbell managed to save hundreds of potential victims, but following the arrival of his successor, Capt. Macpherson, disturbances broke out and Campbell was ordered back to take charge once more. After serving in India for over 30 years Campbell returned to Britain and was promoted to Major-General in 1859. Following the publication of his book he was awarded the Star of India in 1866 for his work in the great subcontinent. His final promotion was to General in 1872, five years before his death in Edinburgh. Significant deposits of Bauxite are to be found in the caps of the largest mountains in South Odisha, and since 1920s the Khonds have seen many of the sacred mountains of Khondistan destroyed.
