Covers are pristine and intact except for slightly bumped corners and a few marks on back. Binding is tight. A Near Fine copy. Fascinating autobiographical account of Albert Schweitzer about his return to Hopital Albert Schweitzer (Hospital Albert Schweitzer) which he had built in 1913 with his wife, Helene, in the forests along the Ogooue River in Lambarene, Gabon, Africa. Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) was an Alsatian-German "Renaissance man" who worked in a variety of disciplines. He was a theologian, physician, humanitarian, philosopher, organist, musicologist, and author. He won the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, which included his work at the hospital, and for his philosophy called "Reverence of Life." In the opening pages of this book, Schweitzer writes that he chose to build a hospital because there were no doctors or hospitals in Gabon (formerly part of French Equatorial Africa) at the time. Schweitzer chose to build the hospital where he did because it was at the nexus of the Ogooue's many tributaries, so it was more easily accessible. Schweitzer's account addresses the rebuilding of the hospital after it fell into disrepair following his leave of absence induced by exhaustion and tropical anemia. Schweitzer ran the hospital until his passing in 1965. Hopital Albert Schweitzer is still open to this day.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. 288, [2] pages. Illustrations (all present). Index. Ink notation on fep. DJ has wear, tears, soiling, and chips. The verso does NOT state "First printing". Ludwig Philipp Albert Schweitzer OM (14 January 1875 - 4 September 1965) was an Alsatian polymath. He was a theologian, organist, musicologist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, and physician. A Lutheran minister, Schweitzer challenged both the secular view of Jesus as depicted by the historical-critical method current at this time, as well as the traditional Christian view. His contributions to the interpretation of Pauline Christianity concern the role of Paul's mysticism of "being in Christ" as primary and the doctrine of justification by faith as secondary. He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of "Reverence for Life", becoming the eighth Frenchman to be awarded that prize. His philosophy was expressed in many ways, but most famously in founding and sustaining the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Lambaréné, French Equatorial Africa (now Gabon). As a music scholar and organist, he studied the music of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach and influenced the Organ Reform Movement (Orgelbewegung). The keynote of Schweitzer's personal philosophy (which he considered to be his greatest contribution to mankind) was the idea of Reverence for Life ("Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben"). He thought that Western civilization was decaying because it had abandoned affirmation of life as its ethical foundation. "Out of My Life and Thought" shatters the old myth and allows us to glimpse the real Albert Schweitzer, a man whose moral example is as relevant and compelling in the 1990s as it was in the 1930s on first publication. Eloquent and heartfelt."-- "Los Angeles Times". Of the many highly esteemed books Albert Schweitzer penned in his life, he valued his autobiography the most. He had become a legend and he wanted to remind readers that he was just a man, and a man who had learned from many others. He had been fortunate to be in the right places at the right times, to meet people of thought and sympathy. He wanted to report his debts to them. He wanted to clarify his reasons and methods for his undertakings and to respond to some of his critics. And, he wished to honor something greater than he was--reverence for life. Reverence for Life became his life's motto, and it brought him pain as well as joy as he sought to respect how precious and unique each life is. Schweitzer believed there was a way to live in the world, accept it, take joy from it--and who could know this better than a man who had placed himself so much in it, given so much for it, and had been ready to receive experience as a gift to be thankful for. "An authentic twentieth-century classic. Few books in our time have had a greater impact on the life and values of untold numbers of people."--Norman Cousins. Presumed First U.S. Edition, later printing.
