Clairin, facsimile letter from Ch…arles Monselet, etched plate by Felicien Rops (Rouir, no. 492.5; Exsteens, no. 502) at the end, text within single rule border with varying typographical headpieces throughout (some very light mainly marginal spotting and staining). Limited to 500 copies per colophon. One of 25 copies on Japon imp?rial. A unique copy, containing 43 fine original watercolors in the margins by Emile Delphes Chabod comprising 29 in watercolor and 14 pen-and-wash drawings in bistre, with several signed by the artist. The illustrations range from the decorative and charming to the ribald and bawdy, reflecting the nature of a number of the sonnets: Massage, Maladies Secretes, Preservatifs, Bonbon Laxatif and Constipation and several with sexual and gastronomic themes. Vicaire II, 38; Carteret, IV, p. 86. Chabod was a pupil of ?mile Signol and Jean-L?on G?r?me and exhibited regularly at the Salons between 1868 and 1881 (see B?nezit). Signed by Illustrator(s).

Tiré à 500 exemplaires. Troisième édition, les deux précédentes étant parues en 1884 et 1888. Il s'agit de la première édition comportant l'eau-forte de Rops en couverture,… les deux éditions précédentes possedant une couverture imprimée. Nous joignons à notre exemplaire la facture de Strobbants pour la reliure, datée du 13 mars 1925 (pour l'anecdote, l'adresse de Strobbants est celle de l'actuel bureau du Syndicat de la Librairie Ancienne et Moderne (S.L.A.M.), 4 rue Gît-le-Coeur, Paris VIe).
