Le tavole sono incise all' acquaforte da Raffaello Schiaminossi, pittore ed incisore toscano allievo di Raffaellino del Colle, il cui nome compare nella prima incisione nel v. del front. raffigurante lo stemma dei Della Rovere duchi d' Urbino, a cui l'opera è dedicata ed in forma di anagramma (S.RAF. F.) nel ritratto dell' A. e in tutte le altre tavv. (posizioni di scherma), numerate da 1-43. Esemplare facente parte della var. A con al colophon: "Senis a natali cristiano 1610. Venundatur in aedibus Camilli Turi ". Al contropiatto anteriore ex libris con nota di possesso coeva di un ufficiale lucchese: "Ex libris Iani Martini Hellespontani Capo de Bombarderj in Lucca. Quid mihi cum loripedibus siquidem directo tramite incedam Anno 1615 7 Julij in Luca". Qualche sporadica e marginale traccia di sporco, peraltro esemplare genuino con ottimi margini in stato di conservazione molto buono. Prima edizione di particolare rarità di uno dei capisaldi della letteratura schermistica in cui l A. è fra i primi che parlino di misura e di tempo trattando l' uso della spada singola che divide in forte e debole in base alla lunghezza, della spada in combinazione con cappa, pugnale e scudo rotella e perfezionò, in una sempre maggiore utilizzazione della punta, la tecnica dell' affondo. "Lâ introduzione nella scherma della teoria sui gradi della spada e' di tale e tanta importanza, ha portato tale sconvolgimento nei vecchi metodi schermistici, che il Capoferro puo' chiamarsi il rigeneratore della scherma italiana" (Gelli). Il titolo fa probabilmente riferimento al ruolo occupato dal Capoferro come maestro di scherma della grande confraternita tedesca presso l'Università di Siena, "Di tutte le opere italiane sulla scherma, nessuna ha mai avuto una tale parte nel fissare i principi della scienza" (Thimm). L' ampio trattato è suddiviso in alcuni capitoli introduttivi seguiti da numerosi esempi pratici illustrati. Ridolfo Capoferro, attivo a Siena, sviluppò teorie e un sistema specifico che furono solo migliorati e perfezionati da Rosaroll Scorza e Grisetti nel 1803 nella loro opera "La scienza della Scherma".
