Les ouvrages de Makintosh et du Colonel Capper ont en commun d'évoquer la situation dans les Indes britanniques, et de traiter chacun longuement de leurs pérégrinations, soit par le Cap de Bonne-Espérance et l'Ile Bourbon pour Makintosh, soit par voie de terre depuis l'Egypte pour Capper.
