Joseph Fuller (1839-1920) was a well known whaling captain who sailed out of New London, Connecticut for half a century after the Civil War. He engaged in a little known branch of the whaling industry that hunted sea elephants for oil, principally in the Desolation Islands in the Southern Indian Ocean. Few men knew the hazards of the 23,000 mile round trip voyage.
