Full-Leather. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Two volumes. Small octavo (194mm x 124mm). 335p + 343p. Beautifully bound in full calf, gilt fillet and rolled borders to the boards, the spine with raised bands, two contrasting lettering pieces, all edges brilliant smooth gilt. All joints are sound.Small flaw to front endpaper of vol one at top of hinge but this otherwise a fine set. With a small case and shelf number label to front pastedown of each volume - possibly ex-Duke of Devonshire's library, books from which have a very similar label. **** A most uncommon work of verse by Charles Morris ? convivial poet, songwriter, and wit of late Georgian London; long celebrated as "Captain Morris of the Life Guards." A central figure in the club and tavern culture of Londons, he served as bard to the Sublime Society of Beef Steaks and moved in the theatrical Whig circles of Covent Garden and St James's. Best known through Lyra Urbanica, Morris belongs to the now largely vanished tradition of Georgian convivial verse which was in marked contrast to the Romantics. Though immensely popular in his own lifetime, his reputation faded with the disappearance of the performative social world for which his songs were written.
