Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: New. 2006 reprint by Rediscovery Books SBPublished Price £28 This well-illustrated two-volume work will capture the attention of anyone with an interest in the British Empire at its height in the mid 19th century, and particularly those who want to know more about one of its least-known far-flung corners - Borneo and Sarawak in todayâs Indonesia - and one of its best-known imperialists, James âRajahâ Brooke of Sarawak, whose journals this book includes. Its author, Captain Keppel, commanding H.M.S. Dido, came from a well-known family - ( Edward VIIâs mistress Mrs Alice Keppel and Camilla Parker-Bowles are descendants) - and was charged with suppressing the native pirates who were damaging the expanding British trade among the scattered islands in the region. Keppelâs accounts of his dangerous journeys and voyages among the fierce Dyak tribes of head-hunters, and the no-less hostile terrain, make for an enthralling read. A combination of exploration and military history in the Empireâs heroic age that cannot fail to fascinate.

Reprint American edition. small 8vo, pp. Light water stain, some very light foxing, some of the cloth on the covers worn off, a good tight copy. This edition was issued without the illustrations and map. "Keppel, a British naval officer who had served in the Opium War, participated in the campaign against the Borneo pirates in 1843-44. During the execution of his orders to protect trade and suppress piracy in the Malacca Straits, he met James Brooke who had received the title of rajah of Sarawak, in perpetuity, from the Sultan of Brunei. The first volume concerns itself with Brooke's exploits in Sarawak from 1838-42, prior to his meeting with Keppel. Brooke attempted to open Borneo for foreign trade and tried to pacify the tribes. As a reward for success in the latter endeavor, he was given his title in 1841. Volume two recounts the military exploits of Brooke, Keppel, and Sir Edward Belcher, who occasionally came to Keppel's aid, gives a geographical overview of Borneo, and includes accounts of the Dyaks, the aboriginal Bornean tribes'" - Hill.
