According to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, McDonald took part in many of the most celebrated cases of the time, including Fitzsimmons-Maher prize fight, the Wichita Falls bank robbery, the Reese-Townsend feud, and the Brownsville Raid of 1906. He is considered one of the big four Captains of the period. Later he served as bodyguard to Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.
