Condizione: Good. First edition, privately printed, with long sections on Hartwell's Egyptian antiquities and its observatory. Inscribed 'A Monsieur de La Martine, Membre de l'Académie Française, Historien, Philosophe, Voyageur en Oriente, Hommage de Captaine Smyth … et de Dr Lee … Hartwell Avril le 28. 1853.' The astronomer Joh…n Lee (1783-1866) had inherited the house just outside Aylesbury in 1827 and in the 1830s built an obser-vatory there. Smyth (1788-1865), one of Lee's regular scientist guests at the house, had helped set up the telescope. He moved to Stone, the village next to Hartwell, in 1842, where he lived the rest of his life. In 1864, Lee named the lunar sea Mare Smythii after him. The recipient here is Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869), the French poet, writer, and statesman, author of Impressions, souvenirs, pensées et paysages pendant un voyage en Orient (1835). Bibliotheca Buckinghamiensis, p. 32; Martin, p. 546. 4to (298 × 225 mm), pp. vii, [1], 414, [2]; with 13 plates (some a little offset), engraved or lithographed, one in colour; illustrations in the text; some light marginal browning; original cloth, rebacked preserving original spine; bookplate of Josceline Grove, who bought the book in May 1984 from John H. Stubbs Rare Books, New York.
