Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Leather spine. Marbled paper over boards. Appears to be a mid-19th century binding on the mid-18th century book. Gold lettering and decorations chipped, as is the leather. Text block good and tight and square. Pages clean, with only minor foxing. First page present in the title page - there is no half title and there are no blank pages as the front. 2 very nice folding engravings of birds at the rear. 28 un-numbered pages of preface and frontis-matter followed by 411 numbered pages. Text entirely in Latin. This copy has been expertly and meticulously annotated in a neat 18th century hand. Small strips of paper with additions and modifications have been tipped in in the appropriate places (more than 30 of these). Names have been crossed out and re-written (for example, on page 130, the name Scarabaeus has been crossed out and "Melolontha" written in -- in this case reassigning this particular beetle to a different family -- there are dozens, perhaps hundreds of similar changes, all in Latin. In some instances, there are additional notes as well, all done as neatly and scientifically as you could hope. Unfortunately, there is no ownership name in matching ink to hint at who the annotator might have been. There is a name signed on the inside front cover in bluish ink, but it is something different, much more recent. The Swedish edition (this one) of Linnaeus' Natural History of Sweden is scarce - I find copies only at Harvard and a Danish library - although there is a London edition from the same year. Linnaeus was not yet 40 when this was published, though his great Systema Naturae was published nearly 10 years earlier. Linnaeus's system of classification, which is still in use today, was one of the singular great achievements of the Enlightenment. The neat divisions of all living creatures into families, species, classes, etc. set off a frenzy of identification and classification, collection and presentation that has scarcely subsided to this day. This title lists 1,351 species of birds, mammals, plants, shellfish and more, starting with Humans and ending with Lepas and Microcosmus (forms of barnacles and sea squirts) + an appendix with 6 more species. 1 page addenda, descriptions of the plates and index. It could be reasonably argued that this was the first organized field guide & this copy is particularly nice in having hundreds of annotations that show that it was used (every page) and updated. Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Hardcover. Leather spine and corners, scuffed and bumped. Front cover detached but present. Patterned paper over boards. 784 pages. Title page printed in black and red. Early ownership name on the title page, as well as a small embossed library name "Library Herma Knoche." No other library markings, nor is it clear whether the embossed mark is from a private collection or a library. Text block good and tight. Corners square. Fading and foxing are mild. Text in Latin. This is volume 1 only of the 2 volume set. The second edition (first edition was 1753) of Linnaeus monumental classification of plants. This was the first use of the 2-name (binomial) system of classification (still in use today), pioneered by Linnaeus. It is impossible to overstate the importance of Linnaeus and his classification systems on the development of modern biology. Early editions of Linnaeus' works are nearly unobtainable. Editions issued in his lifetime (1707-1788) are extremely scarce. This edition (2nd) of Species Plantarum is Linnaeus' list of every known plant at the time of publication. The first edition has 5,940 species. The second edition added to that. Please email with questions or to request photos.

Da: Lorne Bair Rare Books, ABAA, Winchester, VA, U.S.A.
Octavo. 20cm. Contemporary full vellum, titled and decorated in gilt to spine. [iv], 364pp., [ix] engravings to rear. Abrasion and loss to upper corner front board, some wear and chipping to extremities, remains of old paper label to base of spine. A very good solid copy, internally clean, some wear to front pastedown and flyleaf. Ten engraved botanical plates. Frontispiece not present in this edition. Page edges mottled. There are some significant areas of foxing and toning (the book paper quality varies a little), and in some copies of this rather unusual and scarce edition edition the plates at the rear are on mounts and fold out from the text block, on this copy they are bound into the text block at the rear. Water stain to the lower edge of page 219. Largely free of harsh cropping, but with some slightly ragged page edges here and there. The stated first edition of this work was 1751, and its immediate popularity in scientific circles prompted a flurry of other printings; some, like this one were a little ad hoc, and others more elaborate. The 1783 printing of this work from the same publisher states "Second Edition", but in general the Trattner imprints run a rather erratic bibliographical path. The definitive work from the man known as "The Father of Taxonomy" and "The Prince of Botanists", who effectively illuminated the path that led us towards our mid-19th century understanding of evolutionary develpment and scientific classification.
