Mauch obtained the support of Petermann, publisher of this journal, for his explorations, and from 1865 travelled in South Africa and Zimbabwe, initially with Henry Hartley. Together they rediscovered the gold fields of Mashonaland, which prompted a gold rush to the area. Mauch in 1871 travelled to the region of Great Zimbabwe, the ruined city near to the town of Masvingo, and this report of them led to the idea that Mauch had been their discoverer. The last 8pp. of the present paper describes his visits to Great Zimbabwe.
