Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover / Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. First edition. Paperback. 1st p/back edn. The first thing that caught my eye was the geezer with the gold tooth - the second was that he was holding a shooter - and the third that he was pointing it at me.' Carlton Leach is a gangland legend - the mere mention of his name strikes fear into his enemies; yet to his friends he is as loyal and caring as they come. If trouble comes calling, Carlton isn't afraid to let his fists do the talking and woe betide anyone who crosses him, or those close to him. In this book, Carlton gives the full account of his life including how his story has been made into a hugely successful film. Born and raised in East London, Carlton was a key member of the notorious Essex Boys gang and the West Ham InterCity Firm, one of the most violent hooligan gangs to trouble the football terraces during the eighties. He's been shot at, stabbed, glassed - he's even had an axe in his head. Yet the event that really brought turmoil into his life was the murder of his best friend in the infamous Range Rover murders. Carlton vowed that he would find those responsible and make them pay. There isn't much that Carlton hasn't seen or experienced in his life and his tales of violence, gang wars and close calls with death will have you on the edge of your seat. He knows how close he has come to dying and has therefore shut the door on a gangland life. He may have changed but, as he himself says, 'I'll always need to exercise the Carlton Leach brand of justice. It's in me'. Illus. in colour and b/w. 308pp. p/back. Vg+.

Aggiungi al carrelloCard covers (trade pbk size), 706pp, b&w and colour plates. A little wear to card edges/corners, pages a little browned; a very good copy. Of all the Australians who fought in the Second World War, none saw more action nor endured so much of its hardship and horror as the crew of the cruiser HMAS Perth. In three years they did battle with the forces of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, the Vichy French and, the Imperial Japanese Navy. They were nearly lost in a hurricane in the Atlantic. In the Mediterranean in 1941 they were bombed by the Luftwaffe and the Italian Air Force for months on end until, ultimately, during the disastrous evacuation of the Australian army from Crete, their ship took a direct hit and thirteen men were killed. After the fall of Singapore in 1942, HMAS Perth was hurled into the campaign to stem the Japanese advance towards Australia. Off the coast of Java in March that year she met an overwhelming enemy naval force. Firing until her ammunition literally ran out, she was sunk with the loss of 353 of her crew, including her much-loved captain and the Royal Australian Navy's finest fighting sailor, 'Hardover' Hec Waller. Another 328 men were taken into Japanese captivity, most to become slave labourers in the hell of the Burma-Thai railway. Only 218 men, less than a third of her crew, survived to return home at war's end. This is their story, and the story of those who loved them and waited for them.

Aggiungi al carrelloHard cover dust wrapper, xix/467pp, b&w and colour plates. A little wear on dw/board edges; board free corners lightly bumped, pages lightly browned; very a good copy. A chronicle of HMAS Sydney's hunt for the German raider, Emden, as told from an Australian's point of view. In the opening months of WWI, Emden's trail of destruction was tremendous. This one small ship wrought havoc on the maritime trade of the British Empire, capturing and sinking ships almost at will. Australia, sending wool, wheat, and gold across the Indian Ocean, and despatching tens of thousands of young men to join the fight, had a vital interest in bringing Emden to her end. The battle, when it came, was short and bloody, an emphatic first victory at sea for the newborn Royal Australian Navy.
