Die Mehrzahl ihrer Texte entstand zu Anlässen, bei denen das Kirchliche in unmittelbarer Berührung mit familiären Ereignissen stand: Hochzeit, Kindstod, Sterben im Kind- oder Krankenbett. In der Frühen Neuzeit entwickelte sich in Deutschland wie in anderen europäischen Ländern eine öffentliche Debatte darüber, ob Gelehrsamkeit bei Frauen wünschenswert oder überhaupt möglich sei. Der Ausschluss bürgerlicher Frauen von höherer Bildung galt häufig auch für deren schriftstellerische Tätigkeit. Auf eindrucksvolle Weise spiegelt diese Sammlung das wachsende Rollenbewusstsein der Verfasserinnen wider. Eine kontextualisierende Einleitung schildert unter anderem die Beziehungen der behandelten Frauen zueinander und verdeutlicht die geistig-historischen Bedingungen der Zeit. Der kenntnisreiche Kommentar verbindet die Texte mit den einzelnen Lebensgeschichten der Frauen. Er schildert das kulturelle Leben in der mitteldeutschen Residenzstadt Altenburg, in deren Umkreis diese Frauen wirkten. Auszüge aus Kirchenregistern und Leichenpredigten ergänzen die biographischen Darstellungen. Das Quellenverzeichnis berücksichtigt alle überlieferten Textfassungen, während sämtliche Abweichungen, die den Wortlaut betreffen, verzeichnet sind. 470 Seiten mit 10 Abb., gebunden (Olms Verlag 2004).
