Charles Augustus Lindbergh (1902 1974) was an American aviator, military officer, and author. On May 20 21, 1927, he made the first nonstop flight from New York to Paris, a distance of 3,600 miles (5,800 km), flying alone for 33.5 hours. His aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis, was built to compete for the $25,000 Orteig Prize for the first flight between the two cities. Although not the first transatlantic flight, it was the longest at the time by nearly 2,000 miles (3,200 km), the first solo transatlantic flight, and set a new flight distance world record. The achievement garnered Lindbergh worldwide fame and stands as one of the most consequential flights in history, signaling a new era of air transportation between parts of the globe. Lindbergh was the designer of the perfusion pump a handblown, 18-inch-high, clear Pyrex glass configuration that was used to keep organs functioning outside of the body. He made it in 1935 after a culmination of a quiet collaboration with the Nobel Prize winning scientist Alexis Carrel. The device supplied or perfused the organ with a steady supply of oxygenated blood (or a synthetic substitute). Carrel had perfected the fluid, but what he didn t have was a way to properly apply this to the organ. Lindbergh put his mechanical mastery to work designing the three-chambered device to hold an organ in place and allow it to be perfused with Carrel s artificial blood. Only about 20 were ever made, but three reside in the collections of the Smithsonian s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Though largely forgotten, it is important. The apparatus was a precursor to medical devices like the heart-lung machine, and its process helped to develop a feasible means for stopping the heart during surgical procedures. Aggiungi al carrelloxix, 1 leaf, 221, [1] pp; 38 plates. Original cloth. Small white mark on spine. Very Good. First Edition. SIGNED BY CHARLES A. LINDBERGH (dated New York, February 21, 1950). "Fate intervened in Carrel's behalf at this unfortunate stage in the form of Charles A. Lindbergh, who volunteered his assistance. A relative of Lindbergh's, following a bout with pneumonia, developed 'lesions of the heart. ' Lindbergh asked physician friends if such lesions could be removed surgically and was informed that an operation on the heart was impossible. He knew little about the biological aspects of the problem, but being keenly interested in mechanical developments, he considered whether it would be possible to construct an artificial heart which could maintain circulation so that surgeons could stop the heart while operating on it. One physician friend with whom he discussed this possibility introduced him to Carrel. Upon learning of the difficulties Carrel was having with his perfusion pump, Lindbergh agreed to try to design an improved pump and became a volunteer assistant in Carrel's laboratory" (Edwards & Edwards, Alexis Carrel, pp. 90-95). Heirs of Hippocrates 2294. See Garrison-Morton 858.1 for Lindbergh's 1935 article on the culture of whole organs, which is revised and reprinted in chapter 2 of this book. Alexis Carrel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1912 "in recognition of his work on vascular suture and the transplantation of blood vessels and organs." NOTE about books signed by Charles Lindbergh: Lindbergh wrote several books for which signed copies are readily available. But a copy of this book co-authored with Alexis Carrel and signed by Lindbergh is scarce.…

Prior owner's script stamp front and back endpapers. Crisp and clean throuighout. Numerous plates and figures through the text. Lindbergh was an inventor, among his many other attributes. He, of course, is best known for winning the Orteig prize in 1927 by being the first aviator to fly non-stop from New York City to Paris. He became interested in keeping organs alive outside the body when his sister-in-law developed a fatal heart condition in 1930. He worked with Nobel-prize winning Alexis Carrel in the study of organ perfusion. He invented the "Model T" pump, a glass perfusion pump, that is credited with making future heart surgery possible. He and Carrel described an artificial heart in the book and their work with perfusion eventually led to the construction of the first heart-lung machine decades later. 221pp. Size: Medium Demi Octavo.…
