Edition originale très rare de cet ouvrage novateur et fondamental qui fit rapidement l'objet d'une seconde édition et d'une traduction en anglais. Il fait partie de la Collection Horizon- précis de médecine et de chirurgie de guerre. Les auteurs exposent de façon détaillée leur remarquable méthode de traitement des plaies, dénommée méthode de Carrel-Dakin, le chimiste anglais Dakin ayant effectué les recherches sur la solution à utiliser. Cette méthode n'avait jusqu'alors fait l'objet que de deux articles dans le Bulletin de l'Académie de médecine en 1915 et 1916. Ce traitement, difficile à réaliser en temps de guerre, comprenait un nettoyage et un débridement minutieux de la plaie, la pose de nombreux drains entourés de tissu éponge et recouverts de compresses de gaze imprégnées de la solution stérilisante (instillée sans interruption), puis en fonction des résultats des prélèvements bactériologiques soit la suture de la plaie, soit un approchement des lèvres de la plaie. Ce traitement fut alors l'objet de vifs débats, étant notamment très critiqué par Delbet et par Wright, avant d'être standardisé et reconnu comme l'une des plus grandes découvertes médicales faites pendant la première guerre mondiale. En plus de son action bactéricide, la solution de Carrel-Dakin, en raison de son caractère hypertonique, favorise la diapédèse des leucocytes et leur afflux dans les foyers infectés. Alexis Carrel (1873-1944), pionnier de la chirurgie vasculaire expérimentale, des cultures de tissus et des greffes d'organes, avait obtenu le prix Nobel de Médecine en 1912 et était parti aux USA; rentré en France lors du déclenchement de la 1ère guerre mondiale, il avait obtenu de la Fondation Rockfeller les moyens de créer un laboratoire dans l'hôpital temporaire situé dans la forêt de Compiègne où Il se consacra à l'étude de ce traitement des plaies de guerre, Georges Dehelly (1881-1929) fut interne des hôpitaux de Paris puis chirurgien des hôpitaux du Havre.
