Peu après, Georges Pompidou lui commande l'aménagement de ses appartements privés à l'Élysée. Grâce à un système de toiles tendues, Paulin "rechemise" d'un grège apaisant les salons moulurés et crée un ensemble mobilier dont la modernité rompt avec le classicisme du Palais. En 1983, quand François Mitterrand sollicite le designer à son tour, il s'agit cette fois de concevoir un ensemble de meubles pour le bureau présidentiel. Deux ans plus tard, Paulin livre une table tout en sobriété, dont la structure métallique laquée rose est associée à du bois laqué bleu, et à du cuir également bleu. Elle est assortie d'un fauteuil pivotant en bois d'amarante habillé d'un cannage et d'un tissu de laine lie-de-vin. Si le président semble tout d'abord hésiter à afficher une telle modernité, le bureau finit par prendre place en 1988, au début de son second septennat, dans le salon doré, avec d'autres pièces composant un ensemble. Et un deuxième exemplaire est commandé pour le studio de télévision où il prononce ses allocutions solennelles. Cette création restera attachée à son image, et accompagnera d'autres trajectoires politiques, comme celles d'Élisabeth Guigou, François.
