Wenn ich hier den Versuch unternehme, von meiner Arbeit und über meine Bilder zu sprechen, also mit Worten zu beschreiben und Aussagen über das zu machen, womit ich mich täglich auseinandersetze, so bediene ich mich zwangsläufig eines Mediums, das mir - wenn auch nicht fremd - so dennoch im täglichen Umgang weit weniger vertraut ist als etwa ein Eimer voller Coelinblau oder eine Tube mit gebranntem Siena. In den letzten Jahren meiner malerischen Arbeit habe ich versucht, die für mich zentralen Fragen anhand von bestimmten Themenkomplexen oder Sujets zu erarbeiten. Viele meiner Bilder aus den Jahren 1998 bis 2002 haben ihren Ursprung in Venedig. Es ist dabei nicht nur das offensichtlich Pittoreske des Ortes, die malerische Farbigkeit der Architektur oder das durch die Präsenz des Wassers entstehende Licht, welches diesen Ort für mich zu einem immer wiederkehrenden Sujet macht. Von mindestens ebenso großer Bedeutung ist die Atmosphäre und die Geschichte der Stadt, der seit ihrer Gründung anhaltende und über alle ihre Blütezeiten hinweg bis heute stattfindende Zerfall, dem ein ebenso permanter und anhaltender Widerstand durch die Venezianer entgegengebracht wird. In diesem Werden und Vergehen besteht der Anachronismus und die Lebendigkeit dieses außergewöhnlichen Ortes; er ist eine Metapher für das Leben selbst. Nahezu allen meinen Arbeiten aus der "Venedig-Gruppe" ist die kompositorische Teilung des Gemäldes durch die horizontale Linie zu eigen. Sie versteht sich hier als Wasserlinie, die das im oberen Bereich des Bildes Dargestellte in den Unteren spiegelt. Die Wasserlinie als Spiegel tritt zwar bereits schon in einigen früheren Arbeiten in Er-scheinung, wird allerdings erst bei den Venedigbildern zu einem bestimmenden und konsequent wiederkehrenden Bildelement. Es ist nicht nur die für Venedig charakteristische Omnipräsenz des Wassers, die dadurch bildnerischen Ausdruck findet, sondern auch die Spiegelung als Verkörperung einer Reflexion und letztlichen Selbstreflektion von Wahr-genommenem. Die in jüngerer Zeit entstandenen Landschaftsgemälde zeigen auf den ersten Blick eine größere Nähe zum "Realistischen". Kompositorisch verwandt zu den von Venedig inspirierten Arbeiten ist die horizontale Linie, die allerdings weniger als Wasserlinie denn vielmehr als optische Trennlinie zwischen Himmel und Erde wahrgenommen wird.
