Durante gli ani Cinquanta frequenta l'Istituto d'Arte di Roma e inizia a lavorare negli studi di artisti quali Leoncillo Leonardi, Ettore Colla e Pericle Fazzini. Le sue prime opere sono sculture realizzate in ceramica. Nel 1958 sceglie il legno come proprio materiale prediletto: è una svolta artistica che segnerà profondamente la sua carriera. Nel 1964 espone per la prima volta alla Galleria La Tartaruga di Roma, dove gli saranno dedicate due personali nei due anni successivi. Nel 1966 vince con l'opera Cassa Sisitina il Premio Gollin alla XXXIII Biennale di Venezia. Partecipa con il gruppo d'arte povera  alle mostre del 1967 "Arte Povera" e "Im-spazio" a Genova e "Fuoco, immagine, acqua, terra" presso L'Attico di Roma. Dal 1968 comincia a lavorare con il teatro, realizzando le scenografie per il Riccardo III di Luca Ronconi. Nel 1970 partecipa alle rassegne romane "Vitalità del negativo nell'arte italiana 1960-1970" al Palazzo delle Esposizioni e "Teatro delle Mostre", presso la Galleria La Tartaruga. Tra le antologiche a lui dedicate ci sono quelle presso le Suderie del Palazzo della Pilotta di Parma nel 1969, e quella presso il Forte Belvedere di Firenze nel 1983. Book.
