Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a captivating journey into the heart of British Imperial thought at the turn of the 20th century, presenting a collection of speeches by a prominent statesman who played a pivotal role in shaping the British Empire. The author's speeches delve into critical themes of…Empire, governance, and the evolving relationship between Britain and its colonies. Readers will be transported to a time of significant transformation, where the concept of Empire shifted from one of mere possession to a complex interplay of kinship, obligation, and shared destiny. The speeches illuminate the author's vision for a united British race, bound by ties of history, language, and culture, and explore the challenges and responsibilities that accompanied Britain's global presence. With eloquence and insight, the author addresses issues such as the South African War, the role of the Civil Service, and the growing movement for Imperial Federation. The speeches offer a window into the political and social landscape of the era, reflecting the author's unwavering belief in Britain's imperial mission and the potential for a united Greater Britain to shape the course of history. These speeches not only provide a valuable historical record but also offer timeless reflections on the complexities of empire, identity, and the enduring legacy of British colonialism. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Soft cover. Condizione: Fair. 1st Edition. New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1917. The April, 1917 issue (Volume IX, Number 6, whole number 70). Quarto, illustrated stapled wraps, 42 pp.; this is a scarce survivor of the smaller-format issues (i.e., no longer folio size) which were issued late in the life The Masses. 1917… was the last year of publication, and by the time of this issue, there were only months left. Just Fair, due to the absence of the front cover and the separation of the first page from the remaining textblock with rear cover - all of which is itself in Very Good condition, by any periodical standard. As the very inexpensively-produced budget-of-the-heart icon The Masses was, it no doubt deserves its own grading standard, but there is none such. Some small scale chipping on page 3 and rear cover, modest toning to the remarkably healthy contents. See scans. Certainly one of the most seminal socio-political American publications of the last 200 years, The Masses was a collection of ideological art, opinion and reporting - usually contributed with little or no compensation - which strongly represented socialist / marxist values, but in a larger sense was representative of labor, women's rights, and radical left issues in general as those were at that time. Famous names of the era often contributed work, but the names of the regulars are themselves all now in history books. The now-timeless publication was officially shut down by the U.S. Government in 1918, ostensibly on the basis of postal regulations (though it had already suspended publication in late 1917), following two intense and ideologically-charged trials. Eastman and his sister, Crystal, then started The Liberator to carry on; after The Liberator closed its doors in 1926, The New Masses, under the primary leadership of Mike Gold, carried the radical flag. The Masses, as the first, is also the rarest. Text contributors to this issue of April, 1917 included Eastman, John Reed; Louise Bryant; Floyd Dell; Howard Brubaker; Robert Hillyer; Louis Untermeyer; Hutchins Hapgood; Ruza Wenclaw; Leslie Nelson Jennings; Robert H. Lowie; Charles W. Wood; Jane Whitaker; Anne Arnold; Henry Reich, Jr.; Dorothea Gay; Franklin Van Wert; David Rosenthal; Elizabeth Fox; and Nina Bull. Art was contributed by Arthur B. Davies; K.R. Chamberlain; Boardman Robinson; Arthur Young; Maurice Sterne; and Cornelia Barns. Check out all of these names. An extraordinarily rare piece of American publishing and political history. Please see scans. l-lng2. Arthur B. Davies; K.R. Chamberlain; Boardman Robinson; Arthur Young; Maurice Sterne; Cornelia Barns (illustratore).

Minor creasing to wrappers. Some staining to rear wrapper.; 11 pages. Printed wrappers. Page dimensions: 139 x 86mm. Uncommon. Includes some historical i…nformation about the route, mentioning Professor Mainwaring Brown, Major Goring, John White and Robert Murrell. Also an account of the anonymous author's own expedition. "The track cutters did me the honour to suggest that my name should be tacked to this very pretty bit of scenery, as I was the first tourist who had seen it." - page 7. "These evidently furnish good pasturage for the kakapos, which abound here. The road party found two that morning sitting in a fuschia tree, in broad daylight, wearing that embarrassed air of having been 'out all night, don't you know.' which kakapos so often show. We also saw a fine roa [kiwi]. I should think he stood 3ft high." - page 9. "After a change of clothes and an excellent dinner I sat in an easy chair before a blazing fire of manuka logs, my pipe drawing well, listened to the rain on the roof, and sincerely pitied the poor road party shivering in a wet tent and wet clothes over a fire of wet wood with nothing more appetising than cold boiled woodhen for dinner." - final sentence. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Quarto album. Contains 61 photographs (carbon prints) laid into oval cardboard sleeves with gold borders. Bound in dark brown leather over boards with a metal clasp, gilt spine and "Bowdoin '77" stamped in gold on the front board, white silk moiré endleaves, all edges gilt. The portrait photographs of Bowdoin graduates are laid-in back-to-back in oval sleeves on the rectos and versos of 35 cardboard leaves. Also included is a portrait of the album's original owner, Charles Wyman Morse. His signature appears twice in the album. Known as the "Ice King" early in his career in Maine's shipping industry, through Tammany Hall corruption Morse had established a near-monopoly of the ice business in New York City. He purchased several shipping companies and moved into high finance, becoming one of Wall Street's top power brokers of the early 20th Century. "I Am The Panic of 1907" he brazenly declared to *The New York Times*, after being indicted by the United States government for violating federal banking laws. A printed broadside is laid-down on the front free endpaper: "Class of '77, Bowdon. Members List, June 1, 1884," with a printed invitation laid-in: "The Senior Class of Bowdoin College, Class Day Exercises Tuesday, July 10, 1877." Also laid-in is a two-page printed memorial for one of the graduates: "Edward Clarence Metcalf" (1880). A complete list of the names of class members photographed is available on request.
