The protagonist is known as "the king" within his family, due to his extraordinary wealth and power; living with him in a lavish mansion are his nine wives, as well as sisters, poor relatives, servants and muitsai (essentially indentured slaves). Each of the eight stand-alone chapters, following the first, relates the story of one of the women in this mix - the first chapter introducing 'the king' himself. The author uses this narrative framework to portray the lives of women across the socio-economic spectrum in Hong Kong during this period.
