[2], 5pp, [5]. OCLC records a single copy (Chicago). [Bound after:] [Drop-head title:] Park's entertaining fairy tale of the magic legacy. London. Published by A. Park], [s.d., c. 1835] 8pp. OCLC and COPAC together record a single copy (BL). [And:] [Drop-head title:] The old woman of stepney. [London]. Ryle & Co., [s.d., c. 1835] 8pp. Apparently unrecorded. 16mo. Contemporary burgundy cloth-backed powder blue paper boards, lettered in manuscript 'Stories for Children No. 3' to upper board. A trifle rubbed, ink- stain to spine and lower board. Book-label initialled in manuscript 'B.M.' and early inked ownership inscription of George Morris to FEP, manuscript list of contents to verso of FFEP, early alternate pagination in manuscript to upper corners. A charming collection of chapbook rarities, including The butterfly's funeral, a 'sequel' to writer and abolitionist William Roscoe's (1753-1831) most commercial poem, The Butterfly's Ball, and the Grasshopper's Feast (1807). The final bound work, The old woman of stepney, is unrecorded by the usual databases, and concerns an aged crone with a plum tree in place of a nose. The publisher, Alnwick-born James Catnach (1792-1841), is primarily remembered for his prolific broadsheet printing endeavours. In order to satisfy the demands of the urban public for more grittily realistic reading matter than the, largely rural, popular ballad tradition afforded, Catnach commissioned a constant stream of sensational ephemera on the interests of the day. Many of his broadsheets were sold by 'patterers', who would perform as well as selling their wares, bridging the divide between the oral and printed ballad. Printed crudely on the cheapest paper available, the broadsheets were primarily sold at the price of one penny; Catnach was reputed to have paved his parlour with counterfeit coins.

Contemporary red roan, lettered 'Buds & Blossoms' in gilt to spine. Rubbed, spine worn and singed. Early inked gift inscriptions to versos of frontispieces. A coherent sammelband of thirteen juvenile productions, all remarkably scarce â" and one entirely unrecorded - the majority issued by prolific children's publisher Groombridge and Sons, established in 1833. One of only two exceptions not published by Groombridge is a rare survival of Clare de Chatelain's (1807-1876) The Story of Little Maia, initially issued by Darton under their 'Little Folk's Books' series and then reprinted in the author's six-part Tales of the Fairy Folk (c. 1855). The other exception is an early edition of Little Peepy; a charming conduct of life story of a little girl who sacrifices her only shilling to rescue a robin from the torture of two odious boys, initially published by Groombridge in 1853, commonly attributed to sometime editor for the Religious Tract Society George Eliel Sarge.

Original publisher's pictorial upper wrappers bound in. Lightly rubbed. Marbled endpapers, recent armorial bookplate of John Gordon to FEP. A complete series run of sixteen scarce children's chapbooks issued by The Yorkshire Joint Stock Publishing and Stationery Company. The company purchased the premises of Otley-based printer Webb Millington in 1862. Their publications, predominantly chapbooks, toy books, and pictorial lessons, commonly used Webb Millington's old 'stock-blocks'. This re-use of texts, woodcuts, and engravings make dating uncertain. The company does not appear to have survived beyond 1875.

8 works in 1 volume. Fine collection of 8 French chapbook editions, all "Bibliothèque bleue" printed in Troyes, and all but one (ad 7) published by members of the printer-family Garnier. Although these popular works, mostly dating from the Middle Ages, were many times republished - up till the present time - only a few copies survive, making each work in this collection rare. The present copy belonged to the 19th-century architect Viollet Leduc, the restorator of the Notre Dame Church at Paris.Ad 1: Adventurous story about a king in Constantinople who, after the death of his wife, wants to marry his own daughter, Hélène. She runs away and marries the king of England, after which she goes through many adventures. Ad 2: One of the best chapbooks of German origin, here in a French edition. Fortunatus and his children own an inexhaustible purse which makes all their dreams come true, but ultimately leads them to their destruction. Ad 3: The oldest original French comic and facetious romance. The first edition appeared ca. 1530-1540. The story is not based on history, but on pure folklore, and is full of comical events and French "esprit". The father of the protagonist, Jean de Paris, had been called upon to help the Spanish king against his rebellious barons and was promised the king's daughter in marriage, although she was then only three years old. Ad 4: Nisard ascribes the present work to Mme de Gomez, Madeleine-Angélique Poisson, daughter of the comedy player Paul Poisson, and wife of Don Gabriel de Gomez, a Spaniard. Ad 5: Famous French novel about chivalry, dating from the 13th century, but first published in Lyon, 1496. Ad 6: Another famous French novel, a continuation of the adventures of Robert le Diable, also dating from the 13th century, and first published in Lyon, 1497. Here the hero is Robert le Diable's son, Richard sans Peur.Ad 7: All popular editions of Gargantua, including the present, go back to a printed edition of 1528, preceding Rabelais' edition of 1535 and actually forming the basis of his famous Gargantua. Ad 8: Famous picaresque novel, originating from Germany and the Low Countries, but with important Flemish, French, and English traditions. With a small purple binder's ticket and the white ex libris book plate of Viollet Leduc on the front paste-down. The spine and the edges of the boards are slightly scuffed, pp. 21-22 shows a large tear in the bottom margin, slightly browned throughout.l Ad 8: Koopmans-Verhuyck 52; none of these editions in Oberlé, La Bibliothèque Bleue: cf. 86; 275; 109; 103; 92; 105; 264; 269-271; cf. Nisard II, p. 459; 435; 450; 485; 495; I, 535; 544. 19th-century half dark blue morocco, decorated paper sides, gold-tooled spine with "Bibliothèque bleu" lettered in gold, marbled edges, marbled endpapers, bound by Vanette in Paris. Ad 1: With a (faint) woodcut illustration on the title-page, 3 woodcut illustrations in the text, and some woodcut tail-pieces. Ad 2: With a woodcut illustration on the title-page and some woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Ad 3: With a large woodcut illustration on the title-page, a large woodcut head-piece at the start of the text and some small woodcut tail-pieces. Ad 4: With a woodcut ornament on the title-page and a large woodcut head-piece at the start of the text. Ad 5: With a woodcut illustration on the title-page, 4 woodcut illustrations in the text, and a woodcut head-piece. Ad 6: With a woodcut ornament on the title-page and a large woodcut head-piece at the start of the text. TWO UNRECORDED PARISIAN EXAMPLES OF COLPORTAGE, WITH A COLORED WOODCUT FRONTISPIECE OF 'THE AMOROUS BURGLAR'. 12mo. [13.7 x 8 cm]. 108 pp & 108 pp. Bound together in contemporary quarter calf with gilt title and ornaments on spine. Excellent copies of both items, clean and fresh. Well-preserved, unrecorded pair of cheaply-printed humorous tales probably sold by colporteurs (street-hawkers). Such literature by nature survives poorly, and the present titles are wholly unrecorded in any French institutional library including the BnF, per the Catalogue Collectif de France (CCFr). Both compendia are of a similar nature, relating rather bawdy tales of eg a groom who sleeps with two sisters on his wedding night; a valet seduced by his mistress; various bad behavior by members of the clergy; a young widow's advice to her second husband; and so on. The hand-colored frontispiece likely belongs to the second title although it is bound before the first. We note that OCLC records different editions of both titles (with a full Lille imprint only) at Yale; however, neither title is recorded in any French library as noted above.
