Landscape. 7½'' x 9''. Contains title, additional colour title, red printed dedication leaf, Preface w…ith tipped-in Errata, Table of Contents, followed by 20 hand coloured and highlighted lithographic botanical and zoological plates on triple thick paper, the third sheet into the spine with additional folded piece for binding purposes, the second middle sheet for mounting the first sheet which supports the hand coloured illustration. The Rev. Gleig, in his preface, states the authoress began her sketching in Corfu and continued in Ceylon Sri Lanka. This would correlate with the subjects of her drawings, which include oriental flora and fauna such as butterflies, woodpeckers, Oberonia, Cashu Nut (sic), Walking Green Leaf, Walking Dry Leaf, Stick Insects, Nectarina Birds, Red Bead Vine, Fly Catcher, Nutmeg, Thorn, Bee Bird, Mangosteen, Moth, Loriquet, Vanilla, Klugia, and Air Plant. Each plate is hand coloured and highlighted with gum arabic, with attractive calligraphic poem in brown beneath. Some plates have marginal stains, and some paper discoloration to the verso of the previous plate, one page section slightly skewed, ink message dated 1956 to the verso of the initial title leaf, browning down the spine. Interestingly the Cashew Nut plate mentions that the 'fruit is useless, except for the birds to eat', however, the liquor Kaju | Feni (liquor) is now produced from the fruit. Member of the P.B.F.A. The two items are in good condition, lightly aged. ONE: Manuscript Letter Signed by 'Ulster Scot.' 1p, 8vo. Begins: 'Dear Rev Sir / Glad to see you took… up the "cudgels" on behalf of the "Ulster Scot."' The writer of the letter considers that the part played by this group 'in building industry &c.' was surpassed by their efforts 'in cristainising [sic] and civilising the nations of the world'. Descending into sectarianism he continues: 'The Roman Catholic Hierarchy judging from their public speeches would have us believe the very opposite. Like many another Scott I read with delight your article to the "Times" and on behalf of myself and others I return you my sincerest thanks'. TWO: Unsigned Note (1p, 8vo), addressed from '19 Sutton Court Road. / London. Chiswick. W.' Clearly written by Roman Catholic businessman W. Vance Packman, who corresponded from this address at the time. Reads: 'It is a pity that you have failed to point out that all the above were Celtic Catholics in communion with Apostolic See'. Annotated by Hood: 'My answer to this was that I was confining myself to facts.' Laid down at the centre of the page is a newspaper cutting of a letter to The Times from 'REV. J. C. F. HOOD, The Vicarage, Garstang, Lancashire' headed 'Points from Letters / The Ulster Scott'. Begins: 'Your columns lately have dealt with the achievements of Ulster Scots in the sphere of government, law, literature, and science. May I extend the record into the sphere of religion? It is sometimes forgotten that the foundations of civilization in Great Britain were laid to a great extent by men of that breed.'.

C. 20 pages, 8vo to mainly 4to, additions and corrections in his hand, with some cutting and pasting (hence variable page size). "No.1" appears on the bottom of the first page, with place and date (a…bove), presumably indicating a series. From the archive of Richard Bentley, publisher, who may have cxonsidered publshing Gleig's sermons as he did his historical (and other) books in the 1830s and 40s ("Chelsea Pensioners", "Country Curate" Life of Warren Hastings, etc.) - see Michael Turner's list). The text of the sermon is Hebrews XI - 6 - He that cometh to God must believe that he is, [and] that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Image on request.

Aggiungi al carrelloThe context of the letter is explained in Maxwell's entry in the Oxford DNB: 'In the autumn of 1902 Maxwell was chosen by the duke of Connaught, then acting commander-in-chief in Ireland, as his chief staff officer at Dublin. There he remained until May 1904, when Connaught became inspector-general of the forces, and Maxwell fol…lowed him to London. At the end of 1907 Connaught was transferred to Malta as commander-in-chief and chief commissioner in the Mediterranean; Maxwell, promoted major-general at the end of 1906, once more accompanied him, and served with him until September 1908.' The recipient was either the army chaplain Rev. Henry Peverley Dodd, or a relation of his. 2pp, 4to. On first leaf of bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with blank second leaf slightly damaged. Folded once. Addressed to 'Dear Mr. Peverley Dodd'. Good firm stylized signature: 'Your truly. / J. E. Maxwell'. He begins by giving correct the correct (and long) title for the Duke, before discussing the details of 'those supporting H. R. H.', including 'Sir E Merewether should come before me, and I am Major not Brigadier General.' Ends, 'You should leave out all references to Dress, but you can let H. E. The Governor know that H. R. H. will be in Review order Blue but with forage cap, white cover; then H. E. will no doubt order what dress others wear.'.
